The grinding (bearing) noise on "spin", now leaking rusty water under machine... 3 1/2 years old "Legacy" ??? NOT !
I read the McGyver reply, I have the same problem. RepairClinic.com has a bearing/seal kit for $50.35, is this what is needed ? Do you have the parts also ? I would need the same info you were going to send to McGyver.
My grandmother swore by Maytag, I swear AT Maytag ! Any information or suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Both the washer and dryer ar no more than 3 1/2 yeras old, I thought a "LEGACY" lasted forever ?!?!?!?

The washer AND dryer have been NONSTOP problems. The dryer squeeked continuously till I worked on the idler and ALL of the brake pads and retaining bolts fell off of the washer a year ago !
I can rebuild engines, dryers, furnaces, and in general fix just about anything. Question is, can I do THIS ?
One thing is for sure, I'll NEVER buy any Maytag product again.

The front panel comes off. 1st you need to remove the Facia to access the 3 screws...Leak could be door boot seal noise sounds like drum bearings/ if its under 5 years old phone Hotpoint it will cost around £100 for call, parts are free.....If over 5 yaers think new machine as its quite expensive to do full job and not always worth it if old........
Hi just read your posting. Now when is the machine noisy? Is it when the machine pumps out the water or when the bowl spins.Sorry to ask you this but please be accurate when you reply to this question. The reason being is that if it is noisy when it pumps the water it could be your pump but if it is noisy when the bowl turns for the spin then the problem will be your bearings and seals.Select a spin cycle and push start,is it noisy as soon as you push the start button? Please reply with additional information on the questions and I am sure I can help you.Looking forward to your reply.
sounds like a bearing... although it could be the water pump... water pump is an easy fix... bearing is not an easy fix... take the belt off the bottom of the pump (under the machine) and see if it spins freely by turning it w/ your hand... or if it seems really stiff... if it looks good then it's def. your bearing...
First we started hearing a grinding sound during the spin cycle. My husband replaced the belt, which was loose and not helping the spinning of the tub any, thus much wetter clothing after spin cycle. The belt gave us another week of use out of the machine and did drain the tub better, but then water started leaking into the tub from the water inlet (or area where water rushes in to fill tub), and was not up to the usual "rush" of water, when filling up. The grinding sound started again during the spin cycle, and so now we are assuming it is the ball bearings or the brakes and perhaps the water pump as well. Estimates for these jobs on the boards seems to run from $400-500.00. The machine is only 7 years old, but after reading so many posts, maybe I should count my blessings that it lasted that long! This was an all mechanical machine, which I loved. Atlantis Maytag, a very sturdy and solid looking machine. Never did really clean that well though. SOLUTION: we are getting a new machine.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news for you but your maytag washer will not have a motor to transmision coupling. That is only on whirlpool brand and some kenmore brands that are made by whirlpool. Your maytag will have a belt and if it is making a loud sound while spinning your bearing has most likely gotten wet and rusted. That is caused by having a leak in the tub seal and the water getting onto the bearing. This is a major repair and I really do not recommend the average handyman try to do this job. But if McGyver wants to try I will be happy to send along any information about parts and instructions. Just send me the model number and I will let you know what you will need. I really hope this will help and again, sorry for the bad news. Lots of luck.
We too had this problem. Called out the appliance repair man....He took away our machine. Had to fix the Seal, Bearing, and belt. Brought it back after having it a few days and Now SMELLS like rubber burning. After spending almost 300 dollars my husband had to get under it and found a spring stretched to the hilt. We are replacing the spring and we hope no more fire stinky rubbery smell. BUT it doesn't leak nor does it sound like a plane taking off anymore. IF I could do it again??? I would have bought a new washer without all the frills just because I have done some looking and see that this is a "normal" problem for this washer. AND it may happen AGAIN. Wish us luck but that is what we had done. As far as the appliance repair man?? THEY do not know what is wrong with it and why it "STINKS". Should have just had the hubby fix it.
