Intermatic C8835 Cycle Timer Logo

C8835 Intermatic Timer, 30 Minute Cycle, used for and EFM coal stoker to keep it burning in summer. We are not sure how to hook up the timer, we did put the green wire on the green nut, not sure which numbers to jump. We hooked it up started working, and then it trips the circuit breaker to our electrical panel shutting down stove. Any advice will be helpful and don't know where to set pins on dial?

Intermatic C8835 is 120Volt 30-minute cycle timer, which repeats same timing cycle every 30 minutes.
Timer has NO and NC terminals.
You will not use the NC normally closed terminal for this application, so no wire will connect to far left NC screw.

Jodie,
Green wire on green screw is correct, so you have started off well.
Bare copper wire also connects to green screw, so no more talk is needed about ground wires.

If you are using 240V or 277V, then add a comment and we'll lay out a plan for that wiring.
Wiring below is for 120V only.

You have 2 120Volt cables.
1) One cable comes from circuit breaker and has 1 black and 1 white wire.
The black 'line' wire connects to 'switch common' terminal, which is 3rd screw from left.
The white 'neutral' wire connects to 'clock' terminal, which is 4th screw from left.

2) The second cable goes to coal stoker, and has 1 black and 1 white wire.
The black wire connects to Normally Open or NO terminal which is 2nd screw from left.
The white wire connects to Clock terminal, which is 4th screw from left.

Notice that both white wires connect to same screw.

Timer that has a 20 minutes interval up to 1 hour

More information is needed.
For example, a) what voltage timer is needed, b) what Load are you controlling and c) how does timer mount?

Easiest solution is 60 minute repeat cycle timer.
Timer knobs are adjusted, or the timer dial rotates once per hour and 20 minute timing cycle repeats each hour. The cycle repeats 24-7-365.
If you want the cycle to operate certain hours of the day, another 24 hour timer can be installed in-line.

The manual timer in the picture has 120 minutes on it . the discription says it's a 240 minute timer. what is it?

Timer is not identified.
Add a comment with in-focus photo of timer posted on flickr, or describe all details about the timer for possible help.

240 minute timer could be a cycle timer that repeats timing cycle each 4 hours.

Tork 8000 series cycle timers have 6 minute to 1 hour

How to set it to switch on for 5 minutes every 15minutes.

If you add a comment and say which timer you have, I can help with specific information.
Regular off-the-shelf timers will not cycle the way you want.
If you want a timer to cycle ON 5 minutes for every 15 minutes, you will need a cycle timer.
http://www.amazon.com/Intermatic-C8835-Timer-Minute-Cycle/dp/B000GHLV5K
http://www.intermatic.com/products/timers/mechanical%20time%20switches/repeat%20cycle.aspx
This timer rotates around in full circle each 30 minutes.
Set trippers around outer edge of timer dial.
Unit shipped with 10 trippers, each tripper represents 15 seconds so you would need 40 trippers.
20 trippers = 5 minutes.
Amazon sells additional 156T1950A trippers:

I have an intermatic C8865 timer. i want to wire it into an EFM model AF150-1 coal stoker furnace, because the fire goes down to far inbetween actual times heat is called for. also have main switch for...

Intermatic C8865 timer is a 5-hour cycle timer that repeats same cycle each 5 hour period.
This timer has 120Volt clock motor and is 120V timer.
Timer has NO and NC terminals.
NO terminal turns ON when timer turns ON
NC terminals is ON all the time, except when timer turns ON. At this point NC terminal turns OFF.

You have 3 things: 120V timer, 120V honeywell transformer, 120V stoker motor/fan
The transformer needs to be ON at all times.
The stoker motor is going to turn ON when the cycle timer turns ON.

You have 120V cable with black wire, white wire (and bare ground, which connects to green ground screw and to other bare grounds and won't be discussed further)

Black wire is hot
White wire is neutral

Black wire connects to 'Switch common terminal' on timer.
Same wire also connects to black wire on Honeywell transformer.

White wire connects to 'Clock terminal' on timer
Same wire connects to white wire on Honeywell transformer and to white wire on Stoker motor.
So all the white wires are connected together.

Last wire is black wire to stoker motor.
This wire connects to NO terminals on timer.

Here is drawing.

I want a programmable timer that can, eg, switch on a single phase electric motor for 10 seconds every hour. It may be 9 secs or 11 secs.

You need a programmable interval timer.

http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html#ET70
Intermatic and Tork make digital timers with interval settings that can be set for specific short-duration with 1 minute minimum.
(Or set to pulse bell ringing with 1-127 seconds.
10 minutes is 600 seconds)
For example ET70115 single-channel timer.
The timer would be set for 24-hour operation, and then programmed for Pulse, and then set timer with 24 programs, with 1 program for each hour.

Mechanical cycle timers from Intermatic:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-timers-and-manuals.html#cycle
1) Talento 1 hour cycle timer/ each tripper represents 1.25 minutes
2) Model C8835/ each tripper represents 15 seconds.
To operate these timers certain hours of the day, add another timer in-line.
The in-line timer could be digital, but remember digital timers are not protected from power surge and tend to have more problems, and do not have replaceable clock motors and trippers.
