I have just bought an e36 328 convertible it only came with 1 key should it have a remote central locking fob

There is only one fuse that mentions 'Locking', but also refers to the General Electrical Module (GEM). If you change the fob battery, you need to reprogram it to the vehicle. Or you could open any Transit around you. Lots of help below including resetting..

Has the battery ever been replaced? It may only need a new battery. When the battery has been replaced it will need to be 'synched' to the central locking. A few links to help you -

406 FOB / PLIP PROGRAMMING :

The 406 deadlocking remote control has specific button controls, and if the vehicle has two controls, one is set as primary and the other as secondary.

When replacing the Plip, a Primary or Secondary Plip are different part numbers and must be ordered as required. The white label inside the Plip is labelled PRIM or SEC.

1. Turn the Ignition switch ON.

2. Press the large Plip key button (Primary Plip)

3. Within 10 seconds press the large Plip key button (Secondary Plip)

4. If there is one remote, press the Primary plip button twice.

5. Turn ignition OFF.

6. Test Plip's for correct operation.
NOTE : On some 406 models, Plips cannot be re-synchronised unless the battery has been disconnected for 1 minute

1 - Unlock the doors. Put the key in the ignition, and turn from "Off" to "ACC" 8 (eight) times in under 10 seconds. The doors will lock. Leave key in the "ON" position

2 - Program the fobs by pressing any key on the fob. The doors locks will lock/unlock

3 -- Turn the key to Off. Locks will lock/unlock, and you are out of programming mode.

I bought new remote Key Fob on Ebay and it did work properly on my Ford Transit LWB 2003. Good Luck!

This can be cause by one of the three:
1. The battery in remote has run empty.
2. The fuse responsible for central locking is blown out.
3. Very unlikely, but all the doors motors for central locking are broken.

The remote should be built into the key. If not the remote central locking would be after-market. After-market remote central locking is part of an anti theft device so the fob you get with the key's has two function's it opens the door and disables the imobliser. If it had a fob and it was'nt with the key's then the ignition would'nt work so the car would'nt start. So it dosent have remote locking. Before giving up check the dash and suround's for a small either green or red light which looks like it was installed after-market if their is one then it still may have remote locking but was disabled for some reason but although it is there unless you really need it don't bother with it because you will need to get it rewired then get a fob which will need to be programed. Maybe you can try this procedure to resyn your key.
Initialization Procedure.

1. Open central locking system using the car key.
2. Get into the car and close all doors.
3. Using the car key, switch the ignition lock briefly to position "1" and then switch off again. (Please do this switching within 5 seconds or otherwise the system is not ready for initialization.
4. At the remote control key. Press the "OPEN" key (->) and keep holding.
5. When holding the "OPEN" key, press the "LOCK" button three time.
6. After pressing the "LOCK" button 3 times, release the "OPEN" button.
7. If the initialization process is sucessful, the door will lock and unlock immediately to confirm the process.

Should have a key fob.  You can buy a used one and the dealer can program it.  You can not program it yourself.

if your unlocking the doors with a key and the engine is starting it wont have a key fob,if your opening the doors with the key and the alarms going off and it wont start then it will have a key fob

if you hav a remote control key &yr car wont respond . change key batrrey &contact dealer if still dont work for software
