KSS-240A replacement/adjustment in the Sony HCD-H1700

Seems the laser finally reached end of life. Cleaning does not help,
increasing laser power is just temporary solution. So decided to replace
the KSS-240A laser head.

I am quite familiar with electronics (over 20 years in R&D) and well equiped (Tektronix 200MHz), but suppose I do need proper documentation and
may be some good advices. Would somebody help?

IF its an older SONY player, or an player with a KSS type laser in it ? then may be this can help
In the laser unit is a small spring remove this and also the overlying plate, a plastic block is seated at one end of the metal quide shaft move it very carefully in order to push aside the guide shaft as far as possible in order to free the laser in order to remove it, but is not strictly necessary to remove the plate the little spring only can save a lot of trouble with this type of laser.
The cogs are in that early years made to to delicately and get trouble over the time on the white axle excessive wear , the later models laser have it not anymore
If not Sony only to do a cleaning and silicon lubricate the guide shaft(s) of the laser again. can also help
Especially in the case of the mark Technics lasers which has a magnet transport, or Pioneer which often has a worm shaft.

We have a Sony HCD-HP7 Micro Hi-Fi Component system. There are six CD stations or ports on the system. CDs have started skipping in all six ports. There is no vibration where the player is located and the...

Sounds like the laser has become weak. If this is the case, the laser assy. will need to be replaced. Lasers can cost anywhere from 20.00ea to 150.00ea. Then you must consider the labor rates too. If you are unsure about repairing you can try to take the cover off the unit and look at the laser assy. It should have a number on it that starts with KSS-XXX. Where XXX is a 3 digit number.

If you want to you can email me with this number and I will let you know what this laser costs and then you can make a decision from that point. email at jcameo7270@yahoo.com

Sony es cd player skips

you didn't say which "ES" model of player it is but i assume it has the KSS-240A laser pick-up, or something very similar. i've repaired so many sony cd players i've lost count and 90% of them have been down to the same fault you describe.given the age of the player the most common cause of skipping is hardened grease on the laser sled and the drive gears which causes resistance in laser movement hence the skipping. try clean as much of the old grease off the sled & drive gears as possible and relubricate. i've used a drop of light machine oil in the absence of a light grease which has made lasting repairs. but run only a small drop along the sled taking care not to drop any on the laser itself. if of course you have any light grease then i would use this but not too much. hope this helps?

Sony compact disc receiver LBT-D990

KSS-213D lens has soldered joint to protect laser diode from static voltages damage when it shipped. You need to unsold laser diode protection joint and then try.

New laserunit won't work

You seem confident enought to take it apart, have you tried cleaning the runners that the laser runs backward and forward on.
Some times they collect dirt/dust and the laser can't move smoothly so it jerks and skips.

Cd skips

If the unit continues to skip after cleanig the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol, the optics are failing and need to be replaced. These units use Sony optics (KSS-213C I think) and are readily available for $25 or so. Any service shop should be able to replace this for under $100 total.
