I got the ERR today hence my hunting around on the web to see what the problem is. Shame on the companies for forcing these detectors to have a shelf life. There is no reason for that and a rip off to consumers

Detecotrs have a limited lifespan of 5-7 years. So sounds like you need new one (It's not worth to buy just a sensor). Take a look on amazon: Amazon com Carbon monoxide detector (watch out on reviews). I hope this was helpful. cheers

You are going to hate this as much as I did!
In the manual you will read this ..

Manual for Kidde Nighthawk C02 Detector
On page 13
----------------------------------
Unit Malfunction
In the rare event that your alarm malfunctions,
it will alert you with a short “chirp” and the red
LED will flash once every 30 seconds. The
digital model will display “Err” as shown in
Fig. 6.
Seven years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every
30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm.
The unit will not detect CO in this condition. Please replace
immediately.

Are you saying that ALL carbon monoxide detectors have a built in auto fail device....nice if you're selling detectors....not so nice if you're buying them.

  • Ed Ledoux Dec 18, 2011

@ Fishless: The sensor technology used in residential CO alarms is chemically-based, with a shelf-life that becomes less effective over time (typically 5-7 years I think). If it were available, you probably wouldn't want to pay for one that lasted longer

  • Joan Jun 26, 2013

That really sucks. Both of mine started doing this within a couple of days of 1 another. I changed batteries and it did the same thing, so I thought the batteries were old. Then I bought new batteries. Thanks for the insight into this.

Thank you for explaining. It's nice to know why. Nighthawk/Kidde should explain this error on the unit so the homeowner won't panic and call the fire dept.

I agree. Who keeps a manual to something so inexpensive for 7 years? I keep most but didn't have this one. A note on the unit would make a lot of sense. Or let the message say "replace" instead of ERR. That tells you nothing

Kidde Nighthawk KN-COP-DP

I also got the ERR code this morning, with a beep every 30 seconds. I bought the device on October 1, 2001, and this happened on October 16, 2008. I called the manufacturer's toll-free number and was informed that the unit has a 5 year warranty and a 7 year lifetime, and that the unit needs to be replaced. I'm guessing that this error means that its lifetime is over.

Yep! Got mine in 2006...it's now 2013... It's beeping every 30 seconds. After running around like an idiot trying to figure out which smoke alarm was chirping, I finally saw the Err display and figured out it was the CO2 detector. Grrrr

I have two battery operated Kidde alarms which I purchased on the same date in 2003. One was manufactured October 14 2002 and the other was manufactured October 21 2002. On May 1 2010, BOTH ALARMS began chirping every 30 seconds, indicating alarm malfunction. As GeekinTexas suggested, the two units probably reached the end of their manufacturer-defined 7 year lifetime

I might have purchased mine 7 years ago.. but it spends the spring summer without batteries sitting in the closet.. so what??? It has an internal calendar that updates every time that new batteries are put into it??? so mine is really only 3.5 years old in usage.. so how do you define a "lifetime" ??? I think they need to check with Mr.Webster and offer a fix ...

The 7 year clock starts ticking from the time the unit was "first powered up". It doesn't matter how long you have actually used it, with a battery in it or not. ANY operating time is apparently enough to charge an internal capacitor that will store enough power to keep the clock alive for 7 years. Then it enters its "planned obsolescence", er, "End-of-Life" mode; i.e., it's dead.

I love this business model! My parents still have a fridge from 1964 - it still runs great...but then again - it was made in America.

Apparently, the people who are saying that these things have 'reached end of life' are correct. I've managed to download the manual for my Nighthawk (wasn't the kiddie version) and it says amazingly that after 7 years it goes into 'auto-fail/replace' mode.

Which angers me severely because as long as it passes the internal checks, it should just keep on working forever.

All UL-listed detectors are required to have a hard-wired end-of-life alarm due to the limited lifetime of the detection sensor chemistry, to make sure people know when it can no longer protect them. It is not a business model, it's a safety issue. I found the UL requirement through Google; one doc is:

I had the same problem this mourning. Chriping blinking and err. So I got outthe manual and I wrote the date I bout it. 11-1998. So i guess 2012 now it has done its job. But all the manual said was to call there 800 number if this happened. So they can get you to purchase from them..

A reading of 221 ppm carbon monoxide gas is a dangerous level that should be taken seriously. You could try a new battery and reset the detector. If in doubt, always err on the cautious side and have the apartment checked by a professional or by the local fire department.

A new carbon monoxide detector is a small investment that may prevent carbon monoxide poisoning or death.

My nighthawk Kidde carbon monoxide detector keeps beeping every 25-30 seconds. Do I need to buy a new one?

Some models of Carbon Monoxide Detectors will give an audible beep every 25-30 seconds after it has sounded an alert alarm. This may have happened when there was noone home to hear it. A periodic beeping sound may also indicate it is time to change the battery.

Solution: Install a new battery and check your manual for instructions on how to reset the system. Check the expiry date on your unit, it needs to be replaced after 5 to 7 years, according to the manufacturer specifications.

If you are in doubt that your Carbon Monoxide Detector is not working effectively, REPLACE IT. Your safety and your peace of mind is worth it.

My carbon monoxide detector keeps beeping in spite of replacing thebattery and gives an error code of E09. Also it keeps flashing an err on the led redout. I placed it outside and it is still doing it...

Hopefully you have found a solution for your Carbon Monoxide Detector issue of October 4, 2009. The best solution for a questionable CO dectector is a replacement.

A Carbon Monoxide Detector is the only thing that will read, detect and sound an alert when reads dangerous levels of CO levels in your house. A defective carbon monoxide detector will give you and your family a false sense of security and will give you no protection.

Whenever in doubt, always err on the safe side and replace Carbon Monoxide Dectectors, your life depends on it.
