Try this:

1. Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

2. Assuming XP SP2 or later, at a command prompt type:

netsh winsock reset

I attached a new modem to my system today. Now, if I run my system through my router I cannot connect to the internet. The cable people says my computer is running on the router ip address and thus I...

This can be complicated...eveything in your system has an IP address including the router itself. Try using your old router..if it works, then you have an IP adress issue with the new router. Also,
the routers use a scheme called the 802.11 IEEE standard. There are variations on this called 802.11a,b,g,n,etc. Not all devices will work with a 802.11n system...it is still to new. Try using the 802.11g
instead...also most routers use a system called dynamic IP addressing. This means the router automatically signs an IP address to everyuthing in your system...this can change with the addition or deletion of any device in your system...Jeff

Tip

Why can't you connect to the Internet?

First check your TCP/IP address - see my earlier tip on checking you are connected to a network. For most recent systems, (not Linux) open a command prompt window (type "cmd" in the RUN window from the start menu) and type ipconfig /all
you should see your network adapter name and IP address, a subnet mask (don't worry) and a default gateway, also a DNS server IP address. If ANY of these are missing, that's your problem, try repairing or resetting the network adapter. WRITE THEM DOWN. You may have more than one adapter, you need to identify which one is used for the Internet connection.
If they are all there, from the SAME window type "ping" followed by the IP address of your default gateway. If this fails, you have no connection to your internet router, find out why!
If this succeeds, type "ping" again, followed by the IP address of your DNS server. If this fails, type "tracert" and then the IP address of your DNS server. The FIRST address that will be reported is your default gateway; followed by your ISP address; if the only address you see is your default gateway, the link to your ISP  is down, give them  a call. If it succeeds, from the same window type "nslookup"
You will see a chevron prompt, type in the name of the site you want to go to, e.g google.com.
You should then see a reply from your DNS server, and an IP address for your required server. If not, then either your DNS server settings are wrong OR the server does not exist. It will be obvious which it is from the reply you receive. If the DNS settings are wrong, you can change them from the Control Panel, Network, Network adapter, Properties, TCP/IP v4 properties menu; try setting DNS server to 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 and try again.

My computer can not load up the internet browser and says it doesn't have connection. But it does have connection because it shows it is connected to the internet.what should i do to fix this problem?

1. If the internet connection is working on other browser like (mozila, opera).
2. Then you need to download the new version or the same version of ie (internet explorer) to use the internet connection.
3. Go to my network place--> right click-->properties-->local area connection or which services provider you are using use that service provider icon-->right click-->properties-->use the general tab in that last option called Internet protocol (TCP/IP) then click properties. If you are using the ip address by static type the ip address, subnetmask and default gateway over there or other option is there obtain an IP address automatically.

I have cable internet through Time Warner and their modem connects directly to my Dell Dimension 8200 PC. I cannot connect to the internet and I am told it is because my computer will not read the ip...

you need to flush your dns
unplug modem (min of 10 sec)
turn off pc
restart in this order
modem (wait until most of the lights are solid) then pc
if your still having trouble

--------------------------XP Only -----------------------------------------------------------------
  1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.

  2. Click Run... on this menu.

  3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.

  4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).

  5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

  6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).
---------------------------------Vista or higher----------------------------------------------
1) Go to Start and click Run.
2) Run window will appear. Type cmd and click OK.
3) Command prompt
window will appear. Type ipconfig. You then will see the IP address and other network information of your network card
.

4) Type ipconfig /release to release the IP address.
5) Finally type ipconfig /renew to get new IP address.

then if this dont wont restart the computer.
if its still not working you will need a local tech to see if the ip address is hardcoded into the NIC

What is the ip address for it's network/ethernet card?

The external ip address (the one assigned by your isp) can be found at: http://whatismyip.com/

The internal ip address (differentiates the computers on your network) can be found by running the command prompt (start --> run--> cmd or start--> all programs --> accessories --> command prompt) and then typing int eh following command: "ipconfig" (without quotes). It will be the set of numbers in the form 192.168.something.something

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions

Wireless connection

Start->Settings->Control Panel. Double click in Internet Options.

On the Connections tab, click on Never Dial a Connection. While you're there, click on LAN settings. Automatically detect settings should be checked, but normally nothing else should be checked.

If this doesn't help, you may need to rebuild the stack:
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine

Trying to hook up lap top to wireless internet. Comcast tech says there is problem with IP# 169 which preceeds other numbers and needs to be removed for hookup. How can I accomplish this? Model #3150H

Usually you will have an IP address starting with 169 if the adapter cannot get an ip address from anywhere, it is an autmoatic IP address.

What operating system (Windows XP or 2000 or Vista) are you using?

Network Connection

First off, the 1394 connection is a firewire connetion. Firewire is a less popular and slower alternative to USB 2.0 connections. Disregard that in respect to your internet connection. Now in regards to your desktop internet connection.... -Go to the control panel, select network connections, then local area connection. -Right click and select properties -Under the general tab scroll down to Internet protocal (tcp/ip) Make sure the settings are set to automatically obtain an IP address. If they are and still are not working you can try to manually assign an IP address yourself. The laptops ip address might be something like 192.168.1.2 so whatever your laptop ip address is make the desktop 1 number higher in the last field (192.168.1.3 for example). Don't change any numbers other than the last field. You can find out the other information like subnet mask and default gateway by using the laptop. On the laptop go to the start menu, hit run. Then type in cmd, this will bring up a dos prompt. Then finally type IPCONFIG . Listed will be the laptops active internet connections and it's IP addresses. Copy over the subnet mask IP address and the default gateway address into the desktop and like in the previous step just manually assign the desktop a different IP address 1 number higher than the laptop. If the dns server's address isn't listed on the laptop a quick call to your dsl provider will solve that question.
