Question about HP Officejet 5610 All-In-One InkJet Printer
My mom's all-in-one printer is not printing online or offline. did a self-test and the printer itself prints. went to printers and faxes, right clicked to set to online and it changed to ready. then it would mysteriously go back to offline when i checked again. tried to print by going to the document queue and that did not work either. tried to download the driver and it said that the newest version was already on this computer. called hp and they want almost half the cost of a new printer to fix the problem, since the machine is out of warranty. feeling somewhat raped at the moment. the fax, scanner and copier all work. any kind hearts out there with knowledge of a solution to this issue??? can we get her current machine up and printing again??? thanks!!!
Is the printer directly connected to the computer or is it plugged in to a USB hub or print server? If it isn't directly connected to the computer, try plugging the USB cable directly into the computer. You should get a new hardware found message with plug-and-play Windows versions. If that doesn't work I'd suspect a bad cable.
If it is directly connected to the computer already, I've found many USB printers need to have the cable removed from both the device and the computer to reset the printer. (wait ~5 minutes before plugging things back in). This is also true with print servers and USB hubs but you're halfway there going to the direct cable connection.
Did you see any small files listed in the printer queue when you tried to print from there? You may want to clear the spooler. From the command prompt issue the commands "net stop spooler" and "net start spooler" without the quotes. You can do them from the Start Run command as well.

Have you deleted the printer, uninstalled the drivers and related software from add/remove programs, reboot the machine, redownload the drivers from their website??
