when the compressor shuts off most of the freon goes to low side(cold) when it starts..it has a lot of freon to move and it works hard and you hear it loud after it has moved most of the freon over to the high side,the sound is less so not to worry it's normal if it clicks when it starts then you worry
It is possible that your unit needs refrigerant but Before I would have someone recharge it they would have to locate the point of leak and repair it. I would check to make sure it is not some other problem first, like is the compressor operating.
