I have the same problem, I've tried to set a manual ISO value but the problem persists. then If I turn off and on the switch only one shut is possible, then the camera seems to be blocked and the red led blinks.
    Thanks in advance,

I too had this problem. I had owned the F4s from new but only lightly used it. A single shot only then the red light flashing. Nothing I tried corrected this inc changing batteries, resetting DX / ASA setting etc. Even opening the camera back to ensure the film was feeding (one cause) and finally running an old film through on the fastest drive speed. Eventually I had to take the camera to a Nikon repair agent who charged me £230. On the first shot when I got it back the same happened. Naturally it went straight back and they kept it for another 3 weeks. I now have it back and it's OK (so far). I still did not get a satisfactory answer to what was wrong but I was told the top and bottom drives had been rebuilt. Sorry this is not a quick fix but I don't think there is one. to hThere is nothing in any of the books or manuals to help or even mention it. best wishes Brian

I took my F4 to the official agent in Spain, Finicon, and they said the shooter is damaged and they can't repair it because Nikon don't provide spares... Later I took it to Arpi, a important agent in Barcelona with the same result... After a year I couldn't solve the problem.

Hello Ravenshall, could you send me to the contact information of your Nikon repair agent?

One thing to check is the ASA setting. Without film and the ASA set to 'DX' will get you a blinking red light

Nikon F4 - shutter replacement

Hi Miguel,
It would be better to send it to Nikon. For mere mortals swapping shutters may very much mess up the camera beyond repair. If you truly love the F4 have Nikon do the work and at the same time have them do a CLA as well.

Hi, I have a F4 one week ago, I've shoot two films, and when i have developed them, i have seen a line of 4 mm wide along the up long side of each photo. Does anybody know what's...

Thanks for the additional information.

Remove the lens and set the camera to manual exposure mode. Select the "B" (or "Bulb") shutter speed. Open or even remove the camera back and hold the camera up to a light source and press and hold the shutter. Look through the camera to see whether there is any horizontal obstruction towards the bottom of the film gate ( = top of negative, they're taken upside down). If you see an obstruction then assess the damage and if it's a foreign body then remove it. Note that you must absolutely not reach through the open shutter. If it closes whilst you have your fingers or tools in the way you will ruin the shutter assembly.

If that test shows nothing, then you really have run out of options and need to send the camera to a service centre for diagnosis and repair. It's likely to be a sticking shutter causing an overexposed band across the negative, usually the width of the band would show some variation in width and position depending upon shutter speed.

A poor battery will not be the cause of a shutter issue. Unless faulty, the shutter will either work or it won't, unlike the previous F3 the F4 lacks a mechanical back-up shutter speed.

Hello, I'm an Egyptian man who is simple and Rfiqir course, I dreamed of long ago owning a Nikon f4 miracle, and after many years only last week the dream came true, but I do not know how how to use them...

If you call Nikon USA and ask for the 'support' dept you can buy a Xerox reprint of the original F4 user manual for $6.99.
I did this just last week and got the manual yesterday.
There are a number of sites online that sell the reprint but the pictures are solid black because they were scanned. Get it from Nikon USA and the pictures are very clear and easy to understand the features of this camera. Good luck with it...... Perry

F4 has an electronic shutter so check batteries ( see enclosed image ). If your batteries are fresh but still no power ( see if display comes on in view finder ) clean contacts in the battery holder. If still no joy camera should go in.5abb190.jpg

Will not auto focus

"... Autofocus Lock ("AF-L"). Pressing the AF-L (Autofocus Lock) button enables the Nikon F4 to lock the focus. Simultaneous lock of AF-L and AE-L is possible. "'FREEZE FOCUS" - is another great function in the F4. It allows automatic shutter release when subject enters a pre focused distance - available with Nikon MF-23 and/or the 250 exp. MF-24 Multi-Control Back. i.e. with the shutter button fully depressed, the shutter is automatically fired when a subject comes into a preset manually focused position. This function is recommended for sports races because the racing course is usually known beforehand. It also works well in wildlife remote control photography, scientific, forensic and other technical photography. ..."
