  • Click the Start button, then click Control Panel.
  • Double-click "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows XP, or "Programs and Features" in Windows Vista and 7. If you do not see the appropriate option for your version of Windows, click "Classic View" in Windows XP and Vista or "View by: Small icons" in Windows 7.

How to chat using telnet in vista

Telnet is not the greatest programme to use for chat. However, Vista does not have telnet enabled as default. To install it go to:

    Start menu->Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

on left select Turn windows features on and off

After a while a box will appear = look for Telnet Client and select it and press ok

    Now go to Start Menu->Programs->Accessories
    select Command Prompt
enter telnet and the IP Address of the computer you wish to connect with

However, for chat I would suggest the more traditional chat programmes.

    MSN Messenger (Free from Internet)
    Yahoo Messenger (Free from Internet)
    ICQ Messenger (Free from Internet)
    AIM Messenger (Free from Internet)

If most of your email contacts are using Hotmail then use MSN,
if they use AOL then use AIM
If they use Yahoo then use Yahoo Messenger
    Otherwise use ICQ

    Happy Chatting

If this helped you then please vote kindly!

When i installed yahoo messenger it did not open the window so i un-installed it and later installed it again but has encountered the same problem. The window is not opening.

Try rebooting your computer then do not open any programs except going to and downloading new installer and save it to your desktop. Now double click it and run the installer.

If the above does not work or if you are using Windows Vista try using this link for the full installer (does not rely on yahoo servers). These full installers come directly from a yahoo server and by pass the web installer that most use. If on Windows Vista right click the full installer and choose install as administrator. You might have to temporarily disable the User Account Control (UAC). You can easily turn it back on. On the Control Panel (Category View) choose User Accounts and Family Safety, next choose User Accounts, and then click Turn User Account Control on or off.

Go here instead of trying to get it from the Yahoo messenger site >>

I do recommend you get the version as it is the most stable a bug free version of messenger !!

When you download it just save it to your desktop and then run the installer from there.

If you are on Vista you will need to Right click on it then click "Run as Administrator" to get it to install correctly.

    Yahoo messanger installation

"Yahoo messenger is unable to download files needed for installation. Please check firewall settings and retry installation"

I tried to solve this. I went through alot of forums. I uninstalled Yahoo messenger and tried installing new one. I downloaded and pressed "Run as an administrator" when i got this response

"Yahoo messenger is unable to download files needed for installation Please check firewall settings and retry installation."

    I did the following:
Turned of Windows Firewall( Search )
    Uninstalled Yahoo messenger
    Downloaded New One
Used CCLEANER to clean the computer. Download CCLEANER from

    Then I checked INTERNET EXPLORER:

Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings -> Click on Automatically Detect Settings (Unclick everything else except this option) ->Apply -Ok

Check if opens in Internet Explorer.

    Now Install Yahoo Messenger.
    It should work.

Downloading Programs with the new Windows Vista

You need a special version for Vista if it's not what you tried to install already. It can be found here:

Vista also pops up annoying prompts to confirm every system change, which may cause problems. This is caused by User Access Control, and I can walk you through temporarily disabling it if you can't get the above version installed straight away.
