Hey, how's it going?
I was wondering if you'd got any assistance with the problem with your Xbox 360's ethernet port. I have the same exact problem.
We had a storm here and lightening struck nearby and fried our cable modem. That was easy enough to get replaced. Once we got a new one though, I noticed that my Xbox wouldn't connect to Xbox Live. It would tell me that the ethernet adapter was disconnected. I tried calling Xbox support but they were telling me my only solution was to have it sent in for repairs and that my warranty had expired.
Take care!

All the message means is it can't find the internet, so your internet must have went down.. your systems should still be working fine. I don't know much about using usb for ethernet, but that sounds like it would work no problem.
