Solution to the HP Purple Web Cam Issue

This document is located on HP's web site concerning purple tint on certain web-cams.

This document pertains to certain HP Notebook PCs with Windows 7.
When using an HP ENVY 15 notebook PC webcam in low light conditions, images on the webcam may have a purple tint. The ENVY 15 Series webcams include night vision technology that is designed to operate in normal lighting conditions and optimized to operate in low and zero light conditions. The webcam night vision feature includes two Infrared (IR) lights located on each side of the webcam and behind the display panel bezel.
Low to zero light conditions will cause the webcam IR lights to activate. The IR lights provide illumination for low and zero light conditions and help prevent fuzzy images that are typically associated with operating standard webcams in low and zero light conditions.
Turn off the webcam IR lights. While some degree of purple tint may be present under low light conditions, turning off the webcam IR lights will reduce and in certain cases eliminate the purple tint.
  1. Select Start > All Programs > HP > HP MediaSmart > HP MediaSmart Webcam .
  2. In HP MediaSmart Webcam, select Settings > Display > Advanced Settings , and then click the Camera Control tab.
  3. Select the Low Light Compensation check box, and then click Apply .
  4. Click OK .
NOTE:Disabling the webcam IR lights will cause display images to appear darker in low and zero light conditions.

The webcam IR lights are also available on other webcam programs.
Refer to the software Help for additional information.
This document will be updated if additional information becomes available.

  4. Click the Snapshot button to test the webcam's photo quality. c01977626.jpg Double-click the photo thumbnail in the right-column to view the photo.
  5. Click any of the other categories to further test the webcam's capabilities with HP MediaSmart Webcam. c01977627.jpg
After successfully completing the tests, you may need to configure the webcam settings before using other webcam applications. To adjust the webcam settings, follow the steps below.

I recently just bought a new laptop (compaq presario cq56) it has a webcam and all but its says please turn on the webcam, how do i turn on the camera?

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows 7 . A webcam is built into the frame above the display screen on some HP notebooks. Since there is no power button or desktop icon for the webcam, the only way to test and use the webcam is to open a webcam application. Many of the applications used in Vista, such as CyberLink YouCam and QuickPlay, are incompatible with Windows 7. However, HP offers the MediaSmart suite for Windows 7 which includes a webcam application. HP MediaSmart Webcam can record videos, take snapshot photos, add text and animations to the image, track your movements with an avatar, and allow you to adjust the settings of the webcam. Many people use their webcam in a video chat. You can use HP MediaSmart Webcam with most third party video chat programs. To learn more, see HP Notebook PCs - How to Set Up the HP Webcam in Your Favorite Messenger for Windows 7 .
