I can print fine. But I can't scan or copy from the flatbed. It's nothing but one giant black image. Bulb comes on, and scanner bar moves across fine.

I have the same problem recently. I've reinstalled the software and nothing changed.

Thanks tripwire45 for the research in trying to help all of us solve this problem. I followed your suggestions and am pretty convinced now that the scanner is broken, even though the light does go from top to bottom on preview. I appreciate all your efforts to help.

This is most likely a hardware problem. I did a search of HP.com but came up with nada. A search of the web came up with almost nothing, but I did find out a few things. One common cause is that the cable connecting the computer and the printer isn't completely or properly inserted. I know this seems like a strange cause if you can print correctly, but all it takes is one pin not making secure contact to result in a problem as you describe. Make sure both ends of the cable are securely pressed into the printer and computer.

Another thing to try is to open the scanner and do a preview. Does the light go from top to bottom? If yes and the preview is black, then the scanner is most likely broken and requires professional service.

Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer/scanner. You can check to see what drivers are available for your computer's operating system at the following web page:

Software and Drivers

Once on that page, click the name of your computer's operating system and see what software and drivers are available. Like I said before, this is most likely a hardware related problem, but at least some of the people who have made comments in this thread may have a driver related issue.

Good luck and post back your results.

Black vertical line on scan

Usally this is due to dirt accumulated on the glass surfaces of the scanner.
Make sure that both glass windows inside the scanner are clean.
Next step is to clear both CCD's (read heads) but in this case you need to disassemble the scanner.

Scanner produces streaks

It's possible that the black lines you're experiencing are an internal image adjustment issue with the scanner itself. If the scanner glass is otherwise clean, try going to the Canon DR2050/2080 utilities installed as part of the set up of your scanner and running the Adjustment Tool - it asks you to place the "adjustment paper" in the scanner. The term, "adjustment paper," appears to mean anything which has an image or text on it. Be sure you clean the scanner first before running this utility. It will have you put the "adjustment paper" through twice, and that in turn should remove the black lines in your scans, as long as there is no dust on the scanner glass. Office Depot sells cleaner sheets for laser and inkjet printers which also work on faxes and scanners and which will clean the glass for you.

I WANT TO USE THE SCANNER BUT, I DON'T NOW HOW, It go to the printer all the time, could you please help me ? I have the EPSOM STYLUS BX300F PROFESSIONAL, PRINTER,SCANNER,FAX,PHOTOCOPIER.

Basically, you can use the scanner in two ways. Please open the scanner cover and place the document or image you want to scan face down.

1. Press the SCAN button (color button = color scanning, black button = monochrome scanning). then your scanner will scan the document or image in the scanner tray.

2. Go to the scanner program installed in your computer when you installed the printer. Open it and then click the command button SCAN.

Note: Make sure that you installed the Scanner software when you installed the printer. Without the software, your scanner will not work. Please reinstall the printer including the scanner software.

When using the ADF to scan multiple document the scanner assembly stay stationary and the paper is fed across it. Where the scanner parks for this there is something between the scanner and the document, likely on the glass. Often there is a small strip of glass on one end of the scanner bed. Clean here if there is one, otherwise look around and I'm sure you'll find it. Remember, never spray cleaning solutions directly onto the glass, always onto a cloth or towel first. The scanner has a calibration strip that can be damaged otherwise.

Black image

I have an HP 5470c flatbed scanner. It started with partially black scans, and progressed finally to completely black pages. Tried here for answers. Found none. So I opened up my scanner, figured I had nothing to lose. Thought it might be the ribbon cable attached to the moveable tray. Was RIGHT!! Immediately saw a small frayed piece where it was rubbing against the tray. Used some Scotch Long Lasting Tape to re-connect. EUREKA. Problem fixed!!

Scanner Imaging problem

Your scanner’s lock switch may be locking up the carriage unit. Depending on the model you own, your scanner’s lock switch resides in one of two locations. You can find it beneath the scanner itself or in a corner next to the scanner bed after you lift the lid. The switch should be marked with a locked and unlocked padlock symbol; slide the switch to the unlocked padlock to unlock the carriage unit.
It’s also possible that the supplied USB cable is improperly connected to your computer. Connect the cable directly to your PC. Canon’s online documentation indicates that scanners that connect via a USB hub may not work properly. Once you have unlocked your scanner and properly connected it directly to your computer, try to rescan the image.

Possible causes, CCD failure, smudges or marks that can only be picked up by the CCD if the underside of the scanner glass is dirty. Uninstalling/reinstalling your scanner driver will eliminate if its software related or not. From the looks of it, could be with the CCD if the lines are in the same area with every scan attempted.

Black line when scanning or copying

If the line only appears when the scanner is used & not when printing directly from the computer, you are correct in assuming the problem lies in the scanner assy. There should be mirrors attached to the scanner assy which will gather dust and cause copy/scan problems. Remove the glass & clean the mirrors with a DRY cotton cloth. Do not use any cleaning solution on the mirrors as they are sometimes treated & can be ruined if they come in contact with a cleaning solution. Use the dry cloth to wipe off the lens while you have it apart. Also clean both sides of the copy glass while you have it off. Reinstall glass & test.Cleaning the optics solves the problem most of the time. Good Luck!!
