My Book makes clicking noise and does not show up anymore

Help! I have all my files on MY Book and until today it worked great...now it clicks when I plug it in and my computer does not seem to recognize it anymore. What can I do??? Thank you for all the help! Merry Christmas! My WD 500 GB Hard Drive makes clicking sounds and does not open for me.

I tried plugging in to two computers. Same sound and no recognition - error message "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'My Book (k) - Shortcut.Ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the desk is propertly inserted or the network resource is available, then try again."

This occurs on both Vista and on Windows XP.

All my important files are on this hard drive.

I have the same problem - tried using up-to-date usb cables, uninstalling all the usb drivers, etc. Called WD support, was told to plug unit into wall (instead of power strip), re-start computer than attach WD again, with USB cable into computer 1st then into drive. No luck. Was told that drive is "defective".

I tried ripping the external enclosure of mine open to put it directly into the computer hoping the problem was caused by something in the case and not the Hard Drive but no luck for me. Going to see if freezing and putting into my usb hub might work. While I doubt it will work right now the drive is trash so it couldn't hurt.

For me the drive starts to spin up, does 3 clicking sounds all the same, then stops and repeats a few seconds later.

That seems to be a very common problem with these drives. Bad heads. They are dying like crazy...
Check out this page with sounds: http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital
Does it sound like yours?
Most likely the data is gone unless you are willing to spend big money on data recovery. I'm sorry.
You could try remove the internal drive from the enclosure and connect it directly into PC. Nothing else comes to my mind...

I'm a novice, but know enough to be dangerous, so I scrounged the internet trying to find a fix when this happened to me two weeks ago. I was devastated because of course I was too dumb (and cheap) to buy a second hard drive to back up the data on my first one. Lesson learned. Anyway, data recovery was 3 grand or more and I can't afford that so I took the advice of a bunch of people and tried the crazy idea of putting the dumb thing in the freezer. I took the case off using instructions I found on the web and then wrapped it in a white flour sack cloth to absorb moisture and put it in a ziplock in the freezer. After 24 hours freezing I tried again, nothing but obnoxious clicking. Going into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Device Manager I could see the drive but it said there were no partitions. Windows Explorer wouldn't assign a drive letter. I threw it back in the freezer for 10 days and on a whim last night tried again. The USB 2.0 port on my XP computer is broken and everyone told me not to use Vista if I could help it. So I took a USB hub and plugged the new hard drive in first and let it boot up. Then I took the frozen hard drive and plugged it in too and I was SHOCKED when Autoplay started running. Maybe the drivers and software from the good drive allowed the bad one to boot up. I don't know. I just know that it didn't work plugged in directly to the USB but it did via the hub.... Anyway, I have cords running out of the freezer into my laptop which is perched on a chair outside the freezer. I got all my pictures and priceless data off this drive overnight. It did stop a few times (says it can't find the file and the drive stops spinning) and I was able to unplug it, plug it back in and get it going again. It is SLOWER THAN MOLASSES and I would strongly suggest prioritizing your stuff so you get the most important data first because you don't know how long it will run, but I am thrilled beyond belief I got my pictures and home movies back. People told me I was crazy and stupid for freezing a hard drive, but it worked for me so I'm not going to question it. My data is on the new hard drive which I am immediately going to back up onto a second and I will live happily ever after because I didn't need to spend thousands to get my data back. Good luck!

It might take some time depending on the of the disk
be patient then you restore it to its default status Right click on usb drive select properties you will have an array of options Select the hardware option then select your drive properties policies restore defaults In XP Right click on your drive select properties then on customize restore Default in W 7 you might have to alternate doing this repeatedly until the problem is resolved Click start control panel scroll to folder options view place a tick in show hidden files folders and drives

Hi. If you here some clicking noise then your external hard drive might be busted already.

Try to contact a local tech and see if he can still pull out your data from there.

Hope you'll be able to extract your files back.

Have a great weekend!!!

Usb hdd shows up in my computer but i cant access my files

In your windows computer, right click on this drive and click on Search. In the search window click on More Advanced Options and check the checkbox to "Show hidden files and folders" and in the Search field type *.* and click on Search button, all the contents of the drive would be shown there and you can check if the files come in search results or not? In case they do, right click on any file and select the option "Open Containing Folder" and the folder containing the files would open up.

Please rate this solution in case it works, in case it doesnot, please do not rate it and leave a comment and I shall help you further.

I used my hard drive with great success for a while now, switching it between several computers. Today, however, it wouldn't register anymore, my computer won't see it. It makes the sound when i plug it...

Hello,

Sorry to inform you that the HD is starting to quit working. Clicking sound is the indicator that it's no longer responding. There could be some bad sectors in the HD.

You may want to check the Disk Management of your computer to see if you could still reformat the HD. Bear in mind that reformatting the HD would erase all the files saved in it.

1. Connect the HD to the computer.
2. On your computer screen, locate "My Computer" or ""Computer" icon and right-click on it.
3. Click on Manage and then select Disk Management.
4. Write down all the drive letters that would appear.
5. While the Disk Management is opened, unplug the HD and see which drive letter would disappear.

If there's no drive letter that disappears, meaning that the HD is no longer recognized by the computer.

Try bringing you HD into any computer store that offers data recovery.

WD My Book 500 GB external drive sometimes clicks, but still works?

Does it seem to work properly and in a timely fashion? If so don't worry about it. Since it is an external drive it may be slightly quieter than you are used to. Laptop HDDs barely make a sound....

Also keep in mind if there is hardly any data on it, it's not going to have to make much noise to begin with.
