    thanks for your help,

I have tried removing the RAM, swapping them around. so no problem there.

I have taken the battery out. and turned it on all the lights come on and go off, it gets further i get the ibm think pad screen come up then it turns off!! at the same point every time (about 20 sec). I then have to turn the power off and unplugg for a few seconds plug back in to get it to do it again?

if I put the battery in again it goes back to only coming on for 2 sec and going off?? strange

think I should start by replacing the power supply??

This could be a battery problem. Remove the battery and start on the power supply only. If this doesn't work, then check the power supply with an ohm meter to see if it's getting the proper output to the machine. If the supply checks good, then I'm afraid that you have a problem component on the motherboard, and will need to have it professionally diagnosed in order to track down the exact problem component.

Think pad r40/2681(driver prob.i.e. usb/wireless/sound etc.)

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model laptop,
You need to use a computer that has Internet access to download and transfer the files to your computer.

IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

Here is a link to all the drivers and software you need to put back on your R40 laptop. The one you were asking about is a bit more than halfway down the page, listed under ACPI Power Management. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-46024
