This means... audio device is not detected...in the operating system..

try installing the driver from the following link :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3350148&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=0&submit.x=0&lang=en&cc=us

if this doesnt resolve your issue.... check the audio device whether it is detecting in Bios or not... if disabled... enable it and try again...

Have you tried the program 'Everest" which tells you which drivers you need. Seems like you have motherboard drivers.

I have reinstall the windows xp prof to my hp laptop. wen i play music no sounds. wat should i do?

The reason you dont have any sound is that the sound card on your Laptop needs a driver to work normally again, There is usually a website where you can download the drivers from the manufacturer of your laptop for example : dell, compaq.. just reply with the model of your computer and i can help you find the necessary drivers for the sound.
Cheers !!!

ABT MEDIA DEVICE

The device-driver software that you are trying to install cannot find any "matching" hardware on your computer, i.e., you have the *wrong* device-driver software.

Access: http://www.compaq.com and click on "support".
Enter your model-name and model-number, and download the
correct device-driver for your specific computer. Install the software.

In place of vista i installed xp(sp2),after that sound problem.

In order to install the HD Audio driver, you have to install the Microsoft HD Driver (Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio. that said, here's the XP driver for the sound:

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867.exe
