Hard Drive I want to install an "infected" Samsung SP2504C internal hard drive as a secondary hard drive on my computer, in order to apply my virus software to it; Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do this. How would I go about this? Thank You. I'm currently using a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 as the primary and I'm running Vista Home Premium.

You will be able to connect this samsung hard drive which is a SERIAL ATA drive if you the SATA port on ***********-board(remove the jumper from the hard drive)...
after you are connected ,in your bios set the seagate as your primary booting device.....

after this is done you can continue the virus software

Can I use the Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 HDP725025GLAT80 - 0A35390-20PK 250 GB Hard Drive as a secondary hard drive if I dont have the boot disk for it? If so, how do I go about setting it up? I'v tried...

You actually don't need a boot disk for this particular problem. What the computer is telling you with that particular error message is that it is not detecting any kind of operating system on the hard drive it is trying to start from.

If you installed this alongside your current hard drive, it's likely that the boot order is incorrect in the BIOS, and it's trying to load from the blank Hitachi hard drive. Here are the steps to figure it out:

1) Restart the computer.

2) As soon as you do, start pressing the F1, F2 and Del keys repeatedly until the lights on the keyboard flash. (If this doesn't work, there should be a message on the screen that says something like F12 - Menu or something, and you should press that key instead. In 90% of cases it will be either F1, F2 or Del.) This should bring you into a blue text-like screen. This is the computer's BIOS. You will not be able to navigate with the mouse.

3) Using the arrow keys, look through the menus for a Boot Devices, Boot Options or Boot Device Order menu. The location and name of this menu will vary widely based on your computer's motherboard.

4) Once you have located the Boot Options menu, there should be a list of devices. Follow the on-screen instructions to order them as follows: #1 CD/DVD drive, #2 Your regular hard drive, #3 Hitachi Deskstar. Anything else can just go below that if there are more than 3 options.

5) Navigate to the Save and Exit option in the BIOS screen and tell it that you want to save changes, if prompted.

The computer should now restart and access your normal hard drive to boot your computer's operating system, with the Hitachi as a secondary drive. Once you get into the OS, you will need to partition and format the hard drive in order to use the space.

Hope this is helpful!

My Dell PC scan says that my Samsung SP2504C hard drive is about to fail and should be replaced. Is this something I can do?

Replacing the hard drive involves the following process:
  1. Turn off and unplug the computer
  2. Remove the two screws from the left panel (facing the front of the tower)
  3. Slide the left panel back and to the left to remove it
  4. Unplug both power and data from the hard drive
  5. Unscrew the hard drive (You may need also remove the right panel to get to additional screws)
  6. Slide hard drive out
  7. Slide in new hard drive.
  8. Screw in new hard drive in approximately the same fashion as previous hard drive was screwed in
  9. Plug in power and data
  10. Re-install panel
  11. Plug computer in and boot

However, if this is your main or only hard drive, you will need to install your Operating system and all of your software and files from scratch. It may be possible to preserve them, but that's often risky and requires a bit more work. If this is your main hard drive, you probably want to consult an expert on having the old drive contents moved to the new drive.

I have a compaq witha samsung hd M/NSP2504C, S/N S09QJ1ULB30333. What are the speed and buffer specifications and which hard drive would you recommend for a compatable replacement or slave.

Samsung SP2504C is a 250 GB hard disk drive using the new SATA-300 interface, which allows a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 300 MB/s. Its main specs also include an 8 MB buffer, 7,200 rpm rotation speed and support to NCQ (Native Command Queuing). In this review we checked the performance of Samsung SP2504C installed on a motherboard using a regular SATA-150 port and also on a motherboard using the new SATA-300 port.
This very same hard disk drive is also available with a 200 GB capacity, being called SP2004C. Both belong to SpinPoint P120 series from Samsung.

Jumper setting for slave drive

there is no such master or slave setting when SATA is used.
it is mainly used to tell the motherboard which one is master or slave when connected with IDE cable (PATA).
you don't need to worry about it as you are using a SATA HD.

the boot disk priority can be set in the BIOS
press del or F2 after you press the power button on CPU. you will be put with the BIOS/CMOS setup. go to boot priority and set accordingly, there is also an option to set the default hard disk in case you have more than one HD.

Maxtor Internal EIDE hard drive dip switch settings.

I assume you have two IDE controllers? IDE1 and IDE2, I'll try to help, the primary HD needs to have the pin set to primary and the secondary set to slave, if you're running both of these drives off of the same ribbon cable. You may have to go into your BIOS settings and check to make sure the Primary HD is the WD drive.

Strapping or Jumpering for slave

You need the system info for the laptop you are using to see if a 2nd hdd needs to be set as slave or set in the cable select mode. Either right above the jumper pins or on the top of the hdd above the pins you should see 3 groups of 2 pins. They will be marked, ma, cs, & sl. They may not be in this order as each hdd manufacturer is different but all will have those 3 markings. If you set as slave cover the 2 jumper pins marked sl. For cable select cover the 2 pins marked cs. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer.

How do I interface a 2ndery hard drive?

I would suggest that you buy a cheap USB2 to IDE converter from EBAY (they are a few pounds shipped in about a week from Hong Kong). You can use the power from the PC PSU and attach the drive to the USB cable, and then plug it in once your PC is running.

That way, there is no risk that you will boot from your drive when you re-attach it to your PC because you will already be running and can "hot plug" it. Best to turn off AutoRun first, then plug in your drive using your new USB cable and browse around it for the files you want. Make sure you virus-scan any files before running them on your newly disinfected system!

Once your drive is attached, you can virus-scan it, but might be better to salvage the files you wnat and then re-format the old drive. You can leave it attached internally via the USB (just run the wire out throu' a PCI slot hole if you have no internal USB ports, or you can change the little black jumpers on the back to "slave" mode and attach it to the spare plug on the IDE ribbon-cable of either your HD or your CD-ROM. Which you choose would depend how worried you are about the speed of your various drives.

Hope that's some use.

Hard drive Problem

as long as your primary drive is protected with a virus software dont worry about it. Unplug your cd rom ribbon cable and interface the other infected drive to ide1 or ide 0 whichever way dont try to master slave them. Let windows see the other drive as another drive, then the software should handle the infection.

Pending on the infection you've got the partitions may or may not matter, your better off with a solid parition, less seek times to the data anyway.
