It's a laptop, so I guess I will have to check the screen connections. Now what do I check for?

Try this if your problem seems like mine:

I purchased the HP-Compaq C765TU Presario, serial # CND81233B5, from Octagon Computers. My notebook came with only "Freedos" because I was going to Dual-boot Windows XP Professional & Linux, but I found out that my notebook is only “Vista Compatible,” because I could not find the drivers for the sound card & Atheros wireless adapter & the Linux I used, Ubuntu does not have all the drivers needed, so I uninstalled, & I added the only Windows Vista OS that I could get here at Octagon Computers in Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines, “Windows Vista Starter!” (I’m an American married to a beautiful Filipino woman 1 year younger than me, & we are living in the Philippines. I’m, also, Retired USAF.) I went to the HP-Compaq site & downloaded all the new drivers and essential update for my notebook to make sure my notebook was as it should be by HP-Compaq standards. All is well, but only for a little while!

The first problem that I encountered was that after I would Logon, the Welcome screen would do its processing then go to a blank desktop with the cursor - no icons, no taskbar, nothing, so I used “control, alt, delete” to bring up the tasks page & started Task Manager. I found that the “Explorer.exe” was not listed, so I ran a “New Task” from the file menu, & my whole desktop came up. The notebook runs fine after this is done, but I had to do it all the time.

So, I found & bought a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on the Internet & was forced to do a clean install because it was a full version (not an upgrade), which formatted my Hard-drive, but I had backed up all my files ahead of time, so as to not lose all my important data. I went back to HP-Compaq site & downloaded all the new drivers and essential update to make sure my notebook was as it should be by HP-Compaq standards. After doing this New Install, my notebook worked perfectly! However, the same problem has come back as I had with Windows Vista starter.

I have always used Anti-virus, and I run “System Mechanic Professional 8” because it has all the tools needed to seek & destroy viruses, spybots, etc…, & recover/repair data.

I have never had this problem with Windows XP Professional, but this laptop is designed for Vista, and I didn't know that before I bought it. I'm still looking for a permanent FIX. There must be a way to fix this problem permanently!

Found a Fix for Blank screen with cursor!

Here is how to fix the blank screen with cursor:

Most likely a damaged or altered registry entry. Clicks start and type
'regedit' and hit . Expand the keys at left to reach:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on this key, then locate the shell string in the right pane. Double
click it, replace the contents with just:

    explorer.exe

Click ok, then close the registry editor and reboot.

if you can connect a monitor that would be a good test,

Also, if it is just the backlight that has gone, you should still be able to see a very faint dark display of Windows - try shining a bright light on it.

If an external monitor works and you can see windows very faintly, then it is probably the high voltage inverter that supplies power to the backlight that is going bad.

If the same thing happens with an external monitor then it is the graphics chip/mainboard that has a problem.

Hi Jim,

this seems like a no boot / no video kind off issue and mostly is coz of corruptions in softwares or drivers, try booting the computer in safe mode. if it does, then take a data backup. i would not recommend experimenting in this issue as it can crash the computer.
hence call 1-877-805-1027 for expert help.

Notebook boots up slow then screen goes blank

Assuming Vista - please verify
Manufacturer unknown - please clarify
There are a few possible causes;
  • Windows damaged
  • Memory bad
  1. Let determine which it is. Download Microsoft DART and burn to cd. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/enterprise/products/mdop/dart.aspx
  2. Using this disk, test the memory and the hard drive.
  3. Use the disk to attempt recovery. or check crash.
  4. If all else fails, re-install windows.

Monitor goes blank

Try restarting the computer in Safe Mode and then check. In case it flickers in Safe Mode too, then the LCD screen might be damaged and you might need to replace it.

Acer 7720 will not boot

Do you want to try and see if a 'Linux LiveCD' boots? This is the way I test if the computer works. You burn this CD to a disk, and then boot off of it when you're computer starts. I will not modify anything on your computer as long as you go to 'Try Ubuntu with out installing'

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Don't worry, I'm not trying to get you to install anything, just see if it boots into the 'live environment' (means you are running it off of the cd) If this works, that means that it is only your windows installation is messed up, and a reinstallation of windows should work fine with a Windows install CD NOT the recovery cd.

Screen goes blank soon after switching on

Try "Safe Mode" (holding F8 key on boot and selecting "Save Mode"), then run diagnostics and an up to date (virus definitions) Anti-Virus full scan.
If Safe Mode is not accessible then you may want to consider a format and clean install by booting to your Windows (?) CD.

Screen flickers and then turns gray

Access BIOS and test if the flickering continues.
If not, it is a Software problem, do a full system recovery
If yes, it is a hardware issue, better contact Toshiba tech support to have your LCD repaired if you are still in warranty.

If your not in warranty, you need to check out the LCD harness that might have been loosely connected.

Hope this helps...

That would be my guess. Since it is still under warranty, take it back and let them mess with it.
