Depending on how old the phone is, your battery may have reached the end of its "useful life". (Batteries generally will decrease in the length of time they hold a charge over time. This will usually be somewhere between 2 and 3 years, but there is no set time period, and it is also dependent on model specifics, usage, etc.) Of course, useful life, if disclosed at all, by most providers / manufacturers is certainly not emphasized, and is in print so small that you could not see it with a microscope.

Or, it could simply be that the battery is defective, particularly if this is a relatively new unit. Based on the description of the problem you have presented, the first step I would take is to replace the battery, and see if the phone will then begin to charge when plugged in. (You could theoretically try this right at the retail store.)

If the battery is not the problem, and/or replacing it does not help, or you need further assistance please post back and we will attempt to work through further steps. This solution is based primarily on my experience with the same exact issue, and the cause was the battery. Once replaced, all was well...

My sony ericson w810i wont switch on properlly it goes onto a blank orange screen 9walkman screen) but has no functions cant then do anything with the phone is this likely yo be the software ?

When I had the white screen problem, I was about to replace my W810i before I found out about the Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS). I used it to fix the firmware inside my phone, even though the phone seemed dead and my computer wouldn't recognize it. You can download the SEUS from Sony's website here:
