To do a format of C drive, you will have to make sure you have a copy of a windows XP or Vista and all your backup files of your drivers. Place the cd in your drive. Restart the computer and press F12 and choose to boot from CD/DVD rom. When the computer goes to boot it will ask you to press any key.
For XP Once it loads there will be 3 options. Choose to first to setup xp and press enter. Then press F8 to go to next page. Then there will be another menu and two options. Below is also the current setup "C:\Windows "Microsoft Windows XP......."".
Anyway press ESC key to install fresh copy of windows. Then there will be 3 options. Select the 3 option to delete partition, which will wipe the whole drive completely. Then press ENTER to delete. And press L to delete once again. Press ENTER again to start Setup. You will asked to format drive first, choose quick format NTFS system for xp. Then follow on screen instructions and your on you way to install a fresh copy of windows and a clean hard drive. Good Luck! If CD doesn't boot go to bios and advanced settings choose boot sequence so that CD Rom is the first to load.

Go into the control panel. click administrative tools. open computer management. click the tab called disk management. make sure the drive you want to format isnt the system drive. (it wont let you format while running) and format the drive from there. you can also choose the drive letter you want to format to. very useful if you are a neat person. (C: MAIN, D: documents, M: music, Z: dvd writer, V: virtual memory.........)

How to recover lost data's in my computer after i formatted my hard drive

There are applications available that have varying degrees of success in recovering data from formatted hard drives. The bigger problem is whether or not you have written anything else to the drive since formatting it. These applications can recover the partition table and the File Allocation Table if things are pretty much pristine. What ever you do, don't put anything else on the drive you formatted. This will only corrupt things further and make recovery harder. If the data is crucial data, you may be better served getting a data recovery service to do it for you, although this can be very expensive and has no guarantee of success.

This link will take you a listing of many options for recovery. I cannot vouch for any of them.

How do I make Dell 530s boot and load windows?

Are there any sets of audio 'beeps' that occur during startup? If you get anything other than a single beep during startup, it could indicate an error code for hardware failure detected during the POST phase of bootup.

If you have recovery or Windows installation CD's, try pressing F12, go to the bootup menu and try booting from the CD.

Look at the bootup menu and see if there is a hard drive as one of the options. If the hard drive is not there, or if you try to boot from the hard drive from that menu and you get error messages, that might indicate something wrong with the hard drive.

If you can boot from the CD, you may be able to use the Windows Recovery Manager to restore Windows on your hard drive, if the hard drive is working. There may also be a recovery partition on the drive that will allow you to recover Windows, but beware that files on the hard drive may be lost when you use the recovery partition.

If you have files on the hard drive you need to recover, you may be able to remove the hard drive, put it on an USB drive adapter, and use another PC to copy files off of the old drive, even if it cannot boot the old computer. After you have recovered your files, you can try the recovery partition or format the drive and use Windows install disks to restore Windows to the drive.

Format a xerox 250 hard drive

Sometimes you can format it on a windows or linux based machine to the correct format for the printer. You will have to find out which format it expects.

If it says initializing for an extended period of time, it is most likely formatting it and you just have to wait.

Make SURE you absolutely destroy the old hard drive completely. It contains copies of everything you have ever copied..

Have a HP SR1010V, 33GB HD - XP Home. Want to 1) replace HD with a 100-200GB HD OR 2) ADD a 100-200GB HD and 3) ADD a DVD drive. What is best way to copy data to a new HD and to boot the new HD. Rather...

The easiest route would be to install the new hard drive in place of the old hard drive and place the old hard drive below the new hard drive and make it a secondary hard drive or slave drive. Once you have them installed this way you can install Windows XP Home to the new hard drive once you have it installed to the hard drive then you can copy everything from your old hard drive to the new one. Once you have everything copied from the old hard drive you can then format it within Windows to have 33GBs of space to store anything you wish. If you need more detailed instructions don't hesitate to reply.

I need to copy a song onto a Memorex DVD+RW and don't know how to format before I copy. I need it asap. Thanks!

Do not format the disk, if there is something on the disk, just open the folder and delete everything just like it was a regular folder.
Depends what you use to burn with, if you use windows, if it needs to be formatted windows will do it. Disks are not like hard drives, you shouldn't format them, or sd cards. Just erase the data, the only time you should format anything is before loading a operating system and changing
a hard drive or flash drive from say FAT to NTFS.

If you feel you really need to format, just rt click on the drive letter and in the list you will see format.

Cant format my C drive

Sounds like the hard drive might be going bad....but you did say everything copied okay.. maybe you could try installing a different operating system on the partition or using an ubuntu live disk or another utility to reformat the partition before reinstalling windows. Is data loss an issue? Let me know if I can clarify anything.

Have you tried booting from a Windows XP CD? If you have one available you can boot from it, delete the partition and format it. Works all the time for me.

Try formatting / partitioning the drive with windows xp setup / installation cd. If you are trying to format or delete partition in windows and its your c: drive you will not be able to do that.

Windows xp pro will not boot with new hard drive

Its hard to tell just like this without having the computer in hand to check and test the jumpers and connection and all, but quick like this i think it might be a trojan virus that corrupted the boot sectors of the old hard drive, and when you copied the stuff from the old to the new, the virus followed and infected the boot sectors of the new one too. Try to reformat completely using the original windows install disk, and not the system restore/reinstall disk and reinstall windows after the format with the original windows disk again. If I was right, it should boot up OK with a fresh format and reinstall with the real windows CD, then install a virus scan and a spyware scan and scan and clean the old drive completely 2 or 3 times to be sure theres nothing bad left on it, then try to copy the whole disc, but skip the Windows repertory, the Program Files one too and the Documents and settings one also, cause those 3 are the ones most prone to corrupting a fresh install even if there is not any viruses in them. If it does not boot up OK after formating and reinstalling Windows though and says it's unbootable, then either there is a config error in the BIOS of the laptop, or the IDE controller that drives the disk is defective. If it's the BIOS settings, it's gonna be easy enough just changing the settings and won't cost you too much, and if its the IDE controller... then that's another story cause it's integrated in the motherboard like any other computer, so basically another computer will cost less than a new motherboard for a laptop. So if that is the case and the IDE controller is shot, you can still try to use an external USB drive to run the computer but not all computers support booting from the USB though, so before buying a brand new external drive, check the BIOS first to see if it does support USB booting.

Hp Pavilion a1220n -- Copy file errors when Installing windows

Maybe I can help;
When I install a new hard drive I like to re-install the operating system (OS) as well. Unfortunatly this wipes out all your files.
Typically when files do not copy it's either because they're in use or the media (your new hard drive) is not formatted properly.
Note, formatting erases everything on the drive being formatted.
Instruction for this are easy to find online but are all done for you if you use the OS install CD which will walk you through the setup, formatting, and partitioning.

If you have a way to save your files to another drive such as a usb thumb drive, external hard drive, cd or dvd, I would go about it that way. There's usually alot of uneeded files created by the operating system after a period of time and there's no sense in keeping them. They only slow your system down.

One other thing you can consider if you don't have an external hard drive is purchasing a hard drive enclosure for your old hard drive. You can find them at Best Buy. I paid about $30. Its just a case and usb cord you can use as an external hard drive and also copy any files you can still access on this old drive over to your new one.

Let me know if this helps you
