Question about Computers & Internet

I started a virus scan on my laptop as i left to go out. when i came home a few hours later, the laptop was switched off. i couldn't switch it back on because the hard drive was dead. i can only access the setup facility, which says no ide. restoration is on the hard drive which is dead - no disks and no joy from compaq in getting any. if i switch on the laptop, it say pxe-160 fault, and something about no cable, but being a laptop, doesn't have an ide cable.... huh???

thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

i've checked the connections and they are fine. the drive is making a regular clicking noise ever two or three seconds, but that is only since the dive. it didn't make it before i started the scan. any chance it's viral and not hardware?

Hello
seems like your hardrive is broken. one thing you can check is to remove the harddisk and check the IDE connectors and put it back it can be something loose. the other thing is to remove the plastic under the laptop so you see the HD and feel if the HD make any noice or vibrations when you start the computer.

hi if the clicking noise is loud and clear then its a harddrive failure(printerhead in the disk) Im 98% secure its a hardware problem. solution is to change the harddrive and reinstall the OS.

If you want something saved from the broken disk it not impossible. you need a ordinary PC and a good recovery program like ontrackrecovery or something like that to try recovery your information. or leave it to a professional computer service.
    good luck.

Erase my dell computer hard drive

click on the win logo in the bottom lh corner( globe with flags on it)
click on computer in the section that shows up
right click on c drive and there is a section called format
click on that and follow the instructions
remember that all data will be lost and that you will have to reinstall the operating system ( windows what ever)
ON the same page there is a section called --scan for virus
If you have a good security system then give that a click first as it will save a lot of headache later
it will be a full scan so it may take a few hours when it starts as it does every part of the hard drive and everything on it

Low disk space

This couldn't be due to a malfunctioning fan, or any other hardware problem, it certainly sounds like a virus but it's hard to know. I advise using this guide t try and remove any viruses or malware.

I have windows xp home version. The last two wks every time I play a video it stops and starts though out the whole video. I have scanned, malware, virus, nothing shows up,scanned in sake mode no virus....

The problem is most likely that your video is playing faster than the video is downloading. Pause the video and wait a few minutes for the video to start downloading first before playing it.

My computer is saying there is a virus and it is stopping me from recovery or booting from a CD..i has had this problem before ..it is windows & and can you help me

Hello, Why not try booting into safe mode, then scan your system with a very good anti-virus to remove the virus, then if you still want to format,go ahead. How do you enter safe mode, you have to switch off your system and switch it on, immediately you switch it on, start pressing the F8 key, you will see different mode you can start your computer with. Choose safe mode and press enter. in the safe mode scan your hard disk thoroughly with anti-virus. Regards

Computer has viruses which might be why it has a the blue screen

Try entering safe mode and doing the virus scan:
  • Switch on your PC
  • Before the Windows Logo screen appears press F8 to get the startup options menu
  • Chose Safe Mode
  • Once your computer boots, run AVG and let it remove all the viruses. Reboot and it should go into Windows as normal. You might have to rerun the scan a few times to get rid of everything but it should do the job.

Thank you for your response.
I finally did get it fixed yesterday with help from an Acer agent on the phone. I had to re-install the OS, and loose all my files, but none that I can't replace. The pop did sound electrical, but it hasn't done it since I've re-installed the OS. The computer is only around 8 months old, and I stild have a few months of the one year warranty left on it. Before it all happened I installed Windows Messenger Along with my Yahoo Messenger, and Was using a few registry cleaners, in which I may have accidentally deleted something in the registry. Anyhow, it is back to normal, and Im gonna be a little more careful with these registry cleaners, and as soon as I get the extra money, Im gonna get me an extra external drive.
