Have ge profile spacemaker over the range xl 1870, it is about 8 years old, started turning slowly then if used for more than 2 mins at a time it stops working entirely, then panel goes completely blank, after about 5 -10 mins the lights come back on, you have to reset the clock but it will work again so long as you only make it work for 1 min at a time, can it be fixed? is it a fire hazard?

Sounds like there is a stray piece of wire or other metal floating around inside the case. Remove the cover and any breakables in the microwave (the power cord is unplugged for this), turn it upside down over a table and shake it, pound the bottom, and shake it some more--likely the offending piece will drop out onto the table. If so, put it back together and whack it to see if that fixed the problem (cord plugged back in). This process can be repeated.
There's a simple fix for this. Unplug the unit. Take off the top grill with 2 screws. Remove the 1 screw that holds the touch pad unit. Lift up on touchpad unit and lift out. Put a piece of aluminum foil inside a large zip lock bag and tape it to the back of the touchpad unit and reassemble. GE put the magnetron to close to the control board causing stray microwaves to interfere with the board. The foil shields it.
