You have to convert the cassette's analog audio to digital. Get a Behringer UCA 202 for $30 on Amazon.

Does the deck have an input for a microphone?

If not, buy a microphone pre-amp. Or a recorder that has one built-in.

I CANT RECORD CASSETTES ONTO A FLASH DRIVE

You can't. Cassettes are analog and the USB only recognizes MP3. The USB will only record off a normal CD or a CD with MP3s on it. It won't record other formats. The unit only allows to record from CD to cassette or from CD to USB. There are some cassette decks that will convert to MP3. Just do a search for "cassette to MP3 converter"

I have an AT&& 1717 answering machine. I would to transfer a message from the machine to my PC. Is there a way to do that?

The only way I can see doing this is to use a recording program on your computer. Plug in a microphone to your audio input and make that the active audio input. For Windows 7, click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound. Then select Manage Audio Devices. Set your microphone up near the speaker of the answering machine.

Launch the recording software and start a recording session (set the sampling rate), then press Play on the answering machine. Record all the messages until past the one you want to keep. Then use the editing features in the software to delete the early segments.

Audacity is one of the recording software programs that I use but most of my recording is from a cassette tape. I'm using line in and not the microphone.

I hope this helps.

Tascam MF-P01 recorder - hearing nothing during play back

Mine also would not play back on any of the channels but would record. The problem was on the lower board, capacitors C105, C205, C305 and C405, all are 220uF, rated at 10V - on a 9V machine! All four went leaky, which meant that the op-amps each were connected to got a bias which drove the output to 8.5V and no output.
I replaced all four capacitors with new ones rated at 25V and it works again!
