This can be done in the Administrator Account that is in the Safe Mode Option

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard(Before you see windows). On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Click on the Administrator (if there is a password and that is not working then format the system)

in the Administrator account Click
Start >> Control Panel >> User Account >> click on the account name and then click on Change Password

Microsoft.com used to have a password reset program you can download for XP. I've been told it's been removed.

If you can't find it, youre only choice is to reload Windows.

You may be able to get in with the default administrator account.
when you get to the welcome screen, press control/alt/del together.
this will open up a dialog box where you can type in user names/passwords.
There are two accounts you can try here:
try the Administrator account and the Guest account. Try them both with no passwords and try the administrator one with the same password your account had.
You can also type into this box to verify your keyboard is working properly (caps lock off, all keys working, etc).
Finally, if none of this works, try booting in to safe mode and logging in through there.

If worse comes to worse, there are a couple of free programs you can install on a cd and upon boot they will reset the administrator password.

Forgot my administrator password for windows xp

1.you can go into safe mode (F8 at logo when booting up) and enter as administrator and then go to accounts and change windows password and that's with XP. I haven't forgotten password for a pc before but can enter any XP pc in safe if the owner hasn't gone into safe mode and designated a password for "administrator" and usually only have a password for the user account but never have tried on Vista or Win7.
2.if that does not work, you can use software to reset the windows password I know a windows password tool just like below Windows Password Key 8.0 http://www.lostwindowspassword.com

How to Unlock Windows Vista Password?

I would like to introduce "Windows Login Recovery". It not only supports XP, 2000, and NT, I have personally tested it with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. It works perfectly to reset any local user account to a blank password. I Wrote it to an old 128mb USB flash drive to recover windows password. Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm. You can download it from http://www.windowsloginrecovery.com

Hi there Allenia,

To reset the Administrator user, you need to right click your My Computer and choose "Manage". The Computer Management window will open. Expand the Local Users and Groups from the left panel and click Users. Right click the Administrator user shown on the right and click Set Password. Click OK. That's it!

Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!

I forgot my Administrator Password

you should be able to contact dell support and they should have you on file. when you first bought the computer and logged on the web you had to register your computer. dell should have this information on file, also because each windows program has a register number they might also have you on file. i would try this and it should solve the problem.. please rate this and also please reply back if it doesn't get solved..thanks

Yes, when you switch the laptop on hold down the F8 key until you see a black screen with a list of white text, one of the options will be "Safe Mode", use the arrow keys to highlight safe mode (just safe mode, not safe mode with anything) and press return. The computer will start to the welcome screen and you will see a user-name you don't normally see called "Administrator". Click on Administrator and you will find it is not password protected (in spite of the fact that the Administrator account has more access to the system than any other account!) when the administrator profile loads it will ask you if you want to continue in safe mode and you do. click start, click control panel and click on users and groups now click on your son's user account and click remove password. now click back, click on the Administrator account and click change password, the old password should be left blank and you're new Administrator password should be something at least 7 letters, numbers and special characters (!@£$%^&*) long that you can remember. Now just restart and let it start up normally, once loaded advise your son to set a password he can remember or at least write down somewhere safe.
