There is a smudged side on the fax when it comes across. I have changed the toner and shaken the toner up the smudge still comes back in the same place on the fax

By "smudge" do you mean a dark shadow type?

The actual imaging goes through a series of mirrors.
Dust accumulates over time and usually causes poor printing.

If this smudge is showing up on the faxes you are RECEIVING and you have changed the toner then the next most likely cause is a fuser problem. This is especially true if the smudged area feels gritty or the toner rubs off the page in the smudged area. If this is the case then you need to replace the fusing unit or have a local repair place replace the fuser "film" on your fuser unit.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Smudge marks on left side of paper?

If you use new original toner, this should not happen, nevertheless, clean the drum first.

Leaves black marks on copies

It could be leaking toner from the recovery area that sis on top of the dum, it removes any toner that was not transfered to the paper. You would have to remove it and empty out the toner.

Brother MFC8660dn, all copies are smudged, bought new toner and still doing this, what can I do to fix this

If they are smudged and the toner is set when the print comes out, there is something catching on the paper before the heated roller. If the toner smudges after the print comes out there is a fault with the heater and it is not setting the toner.

Toner smudges along left side of documents. Have changed cartridges and cleaned everywhere I could reach but they remain

It is likely your drum unit that is defective. Replacing this should stop the smudging. Be sure to buy a high quality replacement. Original Dell or reputable remanufactured only. Be aware of the vendor's return policy and failure rate before you buy.

After paper jam, prints total smudge on Intellifax 2800...please

This is the test to determine toner/drum or fuser issue.
Print a test page
When you hear the paper feed into the machine open the top to stop the machine
Remove the toner/drum cart.
You should be able to see the page with printing on it. (This is before the page hits the fuser)
If you can see the smudge or marks on the page the problem is most likely the cartridge but NOT the fuser.
If the page is clean the problem is most likely the fuser.

Print smudges and ghosts down the page

Usually ghosting is caused by the fusing unit, which usually means that it needs replaced to be honest. You could try getting into the fuser and giving the rollers a wipe, they may have dry toner on them which could also cause the fault. but i'd say the fuser could need changed!!!
Hope that helps  (",)
