When you try to use the save point, it doesn't recognize a memory card is in the slot. Tried cleaning the slot and the card, even inserted a brand new card, saves other games, we even swapped out the consoles, is it the game itself?

Re: Final Fantasy IX will not save
It sounds like the ONLY constant in this is the GAME itself. On my playthrough, I noticed some catchy areas that caused similar problems (couldn't save, period!) and possibly could be remedied by playing through a different area of the game, it could cause the lens to move to a different part of the disc and free up your save problem...just a guess though.
I know for a fact that some of the FF series and specifically IX had some glitch problems. Try another copy of the game and see what happens. I'd be interested to know if it didn't work then.
On the up side, if you can just get past whatever disc you are on then you'll be free of that problem!

as of right now there is no true fix to the problem. deleting the file does nothing to stop the future failing of future saving. the file is indeed not corrupted, however, there is something corrupt with the game and it doesn't matter if you buy a new one because it will happen again. it is the game! it is not the memory card, the save file, or your PS2. i recently purchased a new hobbit game to see if it would solve the saving issue, it did not. as soon as i got to a certain point during the Barrels Out of Bond chapter, it sent an error message first stating there was not enough room on the card, then later on it stated that the data was corrupt. there was enough memory and the file was not truly corrupt. as far as we know, there is no solution to this problem. many people have had this issue though and it would be nice if the game's developers would address the issue.
