My Toshiba with a little crazy man inside - Help!

Tv is just over 3 yrs old. When turned on it goes straight to the "MENU" screen. On some occaisions when tv is turned on it may show picture for a while then goes to the "MENU" screen. Runs thru menu and changes items like language... to spanish or french. Also switches to VCR mode or TV 1 AND TV 2 is shown on the screen. Most times channels will not change by remote or tv. I have replaced my remote with a new one and still does not work. Is this a 3 year throw away model? or is there someone at TOSHIBA that cares? Is this help line for real help or just bloggers? Very frustrated

Hi,

I beg to differ. The tuner is responsible for selecting TV channels and not the Menu display. Menu display as well as all other functions, channel selection, volume up down are a function of the logic controller. Think of it as a small computer that is responsible for the overall control of the TV.

Initially, what would probably be faulty is the software/firmware that manages the logic/controller board. The only easy user action is to reset the unit. This is simply unplugging from the mains in the hope of reverting the unit back to factory default. Pls unplug the TV from the mains for a couple of hours. Additionally, pls remove the batteries from any or both remotes. This is to ensure that it is nether remote inadvertently affecting the controls. You may also want to check if any of the front panel controls are stuck in a position by flicking them with a finger like tapping on a glass pane.

If there is no significant change, pls post back results and if you are considering a DIY (do-it-yourself). You would need familiarity with electronic circuitry and components.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Dear sir, this problem on ur tv is due to a hardware problem likely to be a tuner card problem but it also looks like ur new to soldering and electronic terms so, we suggest u to take it to the service person to get it done not necesarily to the toshiba service centre a near by one... if it was a programming problem we cud give u solution on hand but this is hardware and different and involves risk factors on openning a television set.. And yes it is a internal component from mother board..

hoping to hear from u ...

Thankyou..

Mind of its own

If you press MENU often enough, you will find and AUTOMATIC TURN ON FEATURE, also called ALARM feature. You can set it to Disable and this should cure your problem. You can also set times when it turns on automatically.
Does this help?

My dad and I fixed the TV/Video problem over the weekend using one of the solutions suggested. Make sure you stay away from the red wire running from the back of the tube to the circuit board.

1. Take the cover off the back of the TV.
2. On the bottom of the TV is a circuit board that is mounted on top of a plastic tray. Remove the cables running from the speakers by squeezing the tab on the white plug and pulling them up and off the board.
3. Looking at the back of the TV, pull the board+tray out (barely secured in there) and flip it 180 degrees so you're looking at the front of the board.
4. Desolder and remove the TV/Video push button. It's labeled on the PCB, and should be the second button in from the left.
5. Place the tray back in the TV and make sure the other buttons still remaining on the baord are aligned with the buttons on the front of the TV.
6. Put the cover back and you're done.

TV works as good as new again. Of course I can't use the TV/Video button on the TV itself, but the remote handles that fine. 20 minutes max, and no repairman needed.

I just had a similar problem, and it turned out that one of the little rubber buttons was pushed down and had gotten stuck under the plastic housing just enough to create contact, but hardly enough to notice at first glance.

Horizontal lines across the top 2 - 3" of the screen

Sounds like you have some capacitors that are needing to be changed in the vertical circuit. The cost I cannot quote but, it probably won;t be worth the cost as replacement TV's are much cheaper now. Zeniths and other brands for the longest time have used not controls inside the TV, they are technician adjustments through a service menu only.

It sure sounds like you have a classic case of bad solder joints. Resolder all the connections on all boards.
