I have a ds lite that works perfectly fine except for the touch screen. When I first turn it on everything is alright but after a few minutes, for some reason the screen gets gradually lighter. Eventually the screen gets way too faded and I'm no longer able to see whats going on on the screen. What could be the cause of this?

There are trade in for new DS Lite or DSi at some Gamestops and EB games. I suggest getting a screen protector, you can pick them up cheap at Walmart with a new stylus so it wont scratch anymore. Some games have regular control options like Super Mario DS. I wouldn't suggest just replacing the screen (costs more than the price of the ds).
Hahahahaha that is how it works but if you go to the little DS at the bottom of the touch screen and tap it there will be a fixer manual use it and when you are done the system will shut off and just turn it on again and also the touch screen is the most important thing on your ds so keep it scratchless and clean! On some games the top screen is an important thing and somtimes it doesnt show anything
double check that both cable/ribbons are connected properly to the motherboard, the small thin ribbon which curls over the top of the motherboard is the one which powers and reads the touch screen so double check this!!
if this is all in fine then im sorry to say your touch screen is broken and will need replacing!
