i got the same problem, camera is on but lcd is black at all.

I have the same problem. However, mine comes back at times. It is black when is turned on, then i would turn it off and for no particular reason at all, it starts working as if nothing had happened. In fact, I sent it for service to Sony when it first happened and they did not find the problem since it worked when they got it.
    Aggravating to say the least.

Silly or not. Coincidence or not, I tried this solution from another type of problem and it worked. I would try it again if it happens but for now it made it work:

Fuzzy Pictures w/ Nikon D3000

If this is a new camera, it should still be under warranty. I suggest you contact Nikon before doing anything else to determine if the repair would be covered under warranty. Nikon also would be in a position to advise you as to what the problem might be so that in the event that the repair is not covered under warranty, you don't replace the wrong thing.

My Kodak Easyshare V1223 turns on and shows all icons normally on the view screen as well as older pictures on the memory card...but shows everything else black and pictures remain black even with flash...

Hi!

It is not necessary something wrong with the camera itself. Sometimes the simptom is caused by the memory card. Reading from it works (so you can see older pictures) but every new picture is written wrong, so the camera shows only black.

Hope it is only the memory card in your case.

Good luck,

Bogdan

I have the same problem as this person: I have a Canon Digital IXUS 500 with the same problem: when turned on previous pictures can be viewed menu and fuctions available , unable to take and view pictures...

Hi!
There could be two causes - a dead CCD or a broken shutter cable inside the lens (so the camera is not able to open the shutter) - they both are common problems with the camera and are expensive to repair. I don't think it's worth it.

Sorry for the bad news!

Problem with canon a420 digicam

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Note that your camera will not be able to take 15 second exposures, as per the above "fix". Instead, place the camera in manual mode, turn off the flash, and take the exposures in a darkened room. This should give you a couple seconds, just enough time to open the battery door while the red and yellow lights are flashing.

Set to auto shooting mode, take pictures, if still get black pictures, you need to repalce the lens unit. CCD or shutter defected.

Sony Cybershot Lens Stuck inside!!!

I have the exact same problem with my Cyber-shot; the lens is stuck inside. After trying everything to loosen it (like wedging a razor knife between the sections, even dropping it or banging it against a book, etc) non of which I recommend, I finally got it open by PUSHING on the black telescoping section surrounding the lens itself. For some reason, this worked!
