Windows Vista boots, log-in screen, welcome screen...then BLACK screen. Although I still have a cursor, and ctrl+alt+dlt allows me to bring up task-manager.
Oddly enough, I can use the help menu in task manager to browse the internet (which is how I'm asking this question)

    Any suggestions?

OK, if you had the problem I had, I have a solution

I had a problem where i could turn it on, i could hear the fan and disk spinning but the screen would stay black and blank. The keyboard lights and wireless connection light turned on, but they wouldnt respond to being switched or touched.

I read this solution, I thought it was bogus, but it was worth a try rather than sending it back for its warranty. I promise you this worked for me.

Ok...
1. make sure the power is off
2. make sure the lap top is not plugged in (charging cord is not plugged in)
3. remove the battery from the bottom
4. hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds
5. plug in the power cord
6. turn it on as usual

good luck

Unfortunately, even I have a HP pavillion DV6 series Laptop. When the laptop warranty ,which I got when I purchased my laptop, was about to expire I called HP support to renew it but they declined citing that HP has stopped issuing warranty for DV series laptops. I knew then and there that this Laptop is a Piece of Sh...t.
I have been using my laptop for two years and there has not been any problem except
-> it gets heated so much I can use it as a room heater.
-> towards the end of the second year ( after purchase) the laptop would just show a black screen and become unresponsive if I used it for more than two hours at a stretch.
    How I tackle this problem:
-> I purhased a Laptop cooling stand ( i got it for 100 rs in Bangalore) , it is a stand with some fans attached which definitely cool the laptop.
With this cooling stand even if I use my laptop for gaming and play for 10 Hrs straight it will not heat up and will not show the black unresponsive screen.

I read on anther website the same solution and it worked for me also. Never shut down or power off the computer is the best solution so far. Also one solution I tried was ctrl+alt+del as soon as you hit the power button continue hitting those buttoons until you see the HP logo and stop. Hopes this helps. Ladydi

First, try these steps :

1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
2. Remove the Battery.
Note : Please see that there are no external devices or cables connected to the Notebook.
3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter and do NOT connect the battery now.
5. Turn on the Notebook power.

If the above instructions doesnot work, try removing and reseating the RAM sticks in the Notebook by following the instructions available from page number in the Manual of the Notebook :

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00737799.pdf

Try starting the Notebook with one RAM module inserted and do try by inserting one RAM stick in another.

Additionally, you need to try connecting any Desktop Monitor to the VGA Port of the Notebook, power it on and press the FN and F4 key to get the display on the Desktop Monitor.

If this works and you get the display on the Desktop Monitor, the issue is with the LCD Display of the Notebook.

Unfortunately, if there is no display in either the LCD of the notebook or the Desktop monitor connected, the issue can be with the Hardware of the Notebook...

By the way, your Notbeook may be one of them in which there is a hardware issue discovered and if it is, you can get the Notebook fixed for free...

Get the Product Number of the Notebook which can be obtained from the bottom of the Notebook which is indicated by P/N and try to search it from the link provided below :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c01300427&dlc=en

If the Product Number of your Notebook is listed in the link above and if it is purchased in US, you can get it repaired for free where you need to contact HP Chat Support.

Find more information from the link below :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01087277&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Hope this helps...

Hi, I had a similar problem with my dv6311eu, the screen just stayed black when I switched the HP on. What worked for me:
Take a hairdryer and heat the fan directly (underside of notebook) until it overheats and the system shuts down automatically, then restart (takes a few seconds before the notebook reacts again) and everything works perfectly ;)

Here the same problem: laptop hp dv6000 is starting up, blackscreen, reset, over and over. After reading all the post about this topic, I started to disassemble the "thing" because it's a worthless peace of .... When removing the keyboard and the power strip, I saw that the fan was very dusty and therefore I took the vacuumcleaner and cleaned with a lot of wind getting through the inside of the laptop the dust. Then I tried the do a start up and guess what: worked like a charm. After closing the case it still worked. But while installing Ubuntu I saw the video (I guess because of overheating) crashing. After the crash it did the same as on the start of my story. Again the vacuumcleaner was helpfull. When a lot of cold air passes the inside of your HP the problem is gone. Therefor I made an USB fan that is blowing cold air between the laptop and the table. Next step is to put something between the laptop and the table to get even more fresh air. It's stable now for a while. So instead of destroying or shooting your laptop (as I have seen on Youtube LOL) just cool it down. I hope this works for you all. :-)

I had the same problem with my DV6000 laptop and i solve it, first make sure every thing off and you have to open the Hard Disk carefully it's on the bottom of laptop and don't touch any avio. hardware just take the small battery out and return it again and start yor laptop and it should work if dosen't.

again go to the same HD and open it and take the RAM out but very carefully in this time. you'll find to slide of RAM just take out and return it again without touching mide of the RAM only the edge of the RAM and close every thing out and start your laptop and in this time should work. good luck.

Please tell me if it's work on my Email : saad_nm@yahoo.com

This in my second HP with problems. The other laptop has a short in the monitor so I have to wiggle it til it stops.

The problem is a damage to the MB by excessive heat produced by Nvidia GPU. The only way to fix this permanently is to take out the MB and reflow the GPU with heat. You can find a video on youtube how to do it. You must take out the piece of gel between GPU and cooling unit and replace it with copper bar or penny made prior 1983 - still made out of copper. Also clean the fan. Use heat transfer paste like arctic cool - not a glue, on both sides of the penny. Install win7. Win7 does not use the coprocessor and will help to ran the notebook cooler. Install speedFan 4.40 - free utility to see what the temp is of your GPU and CPU. If you did good job it will stay around 55C. If your HP notebook is still running check the temp. If the GPU is running 80C or more it will melt the connections on the MB and quit working sooner or later.

This happened to me the other day, I have a dv6000 series hp laptop... the screen kept cutting out on me... and then the fan went out. Well i went and ordered a new fan from expresstechnologies.com for 20 bucks. Ok so i downloaded the pdf file for the manual. Read over it and got to work. I have to problems whatsoever tearing my laptop apart. Read the service manual and TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Well anyway to the SCREEN FIX PART. There are two plugs behind the hp logo on the inside of your lid near the speakers. The plugs disconnect after a while from carrying the laptop around. All you have to do is get your lid off your laptop and take it apart and re-connect the wires. It is a guaranteed fix!

Any other questions let me know.

the problem with the the hp dv6000 is that the wires on the inside always come disconnected.

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01...

read how to take your laptop apart... follow step my step and connect the wire from behind your screen.

It happend to me and that is what the problem was... it was pissing me off for months.

I have the same problem with my dv6000. It was lying around unused for a year now. Last weekend another of my HP laptops broke so I thought lets try the dv6000 again. Ofcourse it wouldn't start. I got the long and then 2 short beeps.
By accident i blocked the fan outlet. So the laptop fan was spinning very hard after a few minutes. I turned it off and then pressed the start button again. And then the laptop started as normal. So when the inside of the laptop gets overheated, then it will start after you turn it off and on again.

Solution 17 is the best, others are just temporary solutions.Clean the dusts first of all. After you did it I would recomend you to install windows 7 which has video driver on its own and never again intstal genuine NVIDIA driver. Or keep your system but uninstall NVIDIA drivers and sell your computer. Or connect your laptop to external monitor and uninstall NVIDIA drivers.

It works on my dv6000 laptop and black screen does not comes back more than 3mths since I did this.

Another solution: you can change the motherboard £70 (still cheaper than to buy any other entertainment laptop) if you know how to do it, if not take hammer film everything and upload to youtube.

Hope this will help you.

You may want to check using an external monitor.

The DV6000 series unit have problems with Video GPUs processors. If you have experienced any other kind of issues like the WiFi not working ect. you may have a bad GPU.

Try re-seating the GPU with heat gun ( View on Utube )

Hope this helps

My hp laptop dv6305us screen is blank power light is on but screen is totally blank.

The DV6000 series of notebooks are known to have problematic motherboards. Try the below options:

1) Hold the power button down for 5 second and the machine should shutdown. Then power on again.

or

2) Flip the laptop over and switch the "lock" switch to "unlock". Then flip the release button to remove the battery for a few seconds. Put the battery back in and try to power the laptop on.

or

3) Power on the notebook like normal. Watch the Hard Drive activity light (the one that looks like 3 stacked plates), if the screen is blank and the activity light is solid or flashing, you know that the LCD screen is bad and needs to be replaced. If that light is not flashing then the problem is your motherboard and it needs to be replaced. Call HP and ask them if your model was part of a DV6000 series recall, if so your repair costs might be covered.
