Have you tried using DVD-R discs? these CAN be recorded in video mode AND finalised for compatible playback in other players. I assume the DMR-ES30V is a DVD/VCR combo unit - if so, the DVD recorder will not recognise RW discs; only DVD-RAM and DVD-R.

Yes, connect to AV2 and you can select the output for AV2 from the menu. Most tv's send a selectable signal out through av2 but if you match to your Panasonic, you may find it will automatically set up with the dvd recorder(like Sony Smartlink) You simply go into the menu, select the av2 output set up and pick what you want to record. I.E. dvt, av1 etc.
You have switched machine onto external link mode Either press external link on remote or find it under the flap. Has a small child been playing with the remote?
Mine will intermittently record only the first minute or two of a tv show I have queued up to regularly record. It seems to happen anywhere from every show to every 5-10.
