On connecting your laptop wirelessly, it is best if you set the router to have wireless security first.

accessing the router's setup page:

open IE, then type http://192.168.1.1 on your address bar, it will ask you for a username and password, thats both admin (these steps will depend if you have changed the settings on the router)

once opened, go to the wireless tab, change your Wireless Network Name (SSID) to something esle instead of Linskys, like your name perhaps. then set the channel to 11ghz and hit save settings.

now look for a Wireless Security SUBTAB, enable to wireless security, under security mode select WPA-Personal (PSK) set your algorithm to TKIP and make up a password on the blank space that says Passphrase / Pre Shared Key , that will be you wireless security code. now hit save settings.

in connecting your wireless laptop, make sure the wireless adapter on the device is enabled and it will automatically locate the wireless network and wil ask you for the security code, once you place it, you will get connection.

Resuming verizon dsl usb internet connection

If you reformatted your Windows on your pc, there's no need to change the settings of your network connections. The Westell 6100 can either be connected to your pc using the Ethernet port or the USB port if you're using the combo cable or Y-cable. It's more stable to use the Ethernet port for your Lan connection. For the USB, to reinstall the USB connection properly, you'll need the Verizon Installation CD. Make sure the USB is not connected to your PC first before you install it. You just need to follow the CD because it will tell you when to hook up the USB cable to the pc. If you still have the CD, after it runs, you have to select existing customer and then select connect new modem. After that you just to have follow the steps to install the USB connection properly and then your modem will work fine afterwards. If the problem still persists, you can try replacing the cable. If all else fails, it could be a modem problem already. You also need to check your Network Interface Card of NIC as we call it, it's built in your pc. it's the device that allows your pc to communicate with the modem. Normally after reinstalling windows, the NIC is forgotten, make sure you also install the drivers and utilities Cd for your windows.

Cannot connect to my Sony laptop with Windows vista

Hmm..the best way I can think of here is to get both Techs on the same line so that they can discuss what the problem really is. I've tried this before and I have to admit. Things worked out very well, It seems a device built in my laptop was not running properly, so I had to install it again, it's called the NIC or Network Interface Card and it's the device that allows your laptop to communicate with the modem.
Regarding the lights in your modem. The DSL light should always be Steady Green, that means that your modem is in Sync with the network. If it's blinking, check all connections, make sure every physical connection is connected properly, if the dsl light is still blinking, that's a network problem already and you should call Verizon so that they can send a tech to fix it.

Sometimes it's difficult to isolate the problem for an internet connection, but to make it clearer for you and anyone else with the same issue. The modem is the central part of the connection. It's a verizon problem if the problem is the connection of the modem to the central office, and you can check it with the DSL light and Internet light.

It can either be a Verizon Problem or a Modem to PC problem, if the problem is between the modem to the pc. Possible Scenarios here are: The modem is defective, the NIC is defective, the Ethernet Cable is defective.
The first is a verizon problem only if the modem is still covered by warranty, if the modem is qualified for a DSP or a Device Service Plan, then that's good, you don't need to buy a new modem anymore. The second and third issue is a physical problem with the devices already and you'll need to have your pc fixed.

Try and isolate the issue, and if you can, let me know and I'll let you know what you can do to fix your problem.

Switching DSL Modems

Your dsl line stays the same. you're only changing your dsl equipment.

if you are not able to go online using the 327w, you might need to have it configured depending on the type of connection that you have. if you are using PPPoE (which means you enter a username and password on the modem to connect to verizon) you need your 327w configured for pppoe. but if you are using DHCP connection, any modem or routers should be plug and play.

Most verizon customers from the west coast uses DHCP while those on the east coast uses PPPoE.

You can call tech support to make sure which type of connection you are using.

Can not setup modem:Westell 6100 to router:Linksys WRT54G

i think the best way is to describe to you the physical setup first. so you have a computer, a modem, and a router. the setup should be like this: from the walljack, the phonecable is connected to the 6100, make sure there are no micro filters connected between the walljack and the phone line because it will not allow you to connect to the dsl. from the modem, the data/internet cable at the back of it, using an ethernet cable, should be connected to the router. and at the back of the router E1 to E4, another ethernet cable is connected there and the other end of the cable is to be connected to your computer. you are right in bridging the modem, the reason for that is because both the westell 6100 and router have GUI's or Graphical User Interfaces, in short, they each have their own virtual brain. you will not have a connection if both of them have this GUI thing, so you need to bridge your westell 6100, so that the only GUI active is the routers. to bridge the modem you may need assistance from tech support of your ISP provider. assuming that's done, light status in your 6100 should have a solid DSL light. for the router, it should have lights in WAN, WLAN if you want to connect wirelessly and E1 to E4, whichever ethernet port you're using for a wired connection. you have to access the GUI of the router to make sure you have a routable WAN IP Address. As for the IP address in your computer, it should be a 192.168.x.xxx type of ip address. this is the LAN IP Address. Basically you need to have routable WAN and LAN IP Addresses to be able to connect online. you will need to configure the GUI of your router to be able to do this. for that you may need assistance from tech support of the router or if you can follow the instructions in the manual, by all means do so. the most important thing in this setup is bridging the modem.

Setup DIR-655 w/ Westell 6100 USB DSL Modem

First check if your computer can get on the modem with an Ethernet ( This is to find out if your router will work with your modem) If you cannot get on give your ISP a call to have them configure the modem for Ethernet connection. If you do get on then connect the router to the modem and your computer to the router. You can run the CD for the router or do the connection manually.
