CPU compatibility issues

I have just replaced my Intel Pentium 4 1.7Ghz CPU with an Itel Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz. However, the system keeps repeating that it has failed CPU test. Why is this happening and what is the maximum clock speed a CPU can have in a P4B?

Board is not supporting the cpu, it is not the faulty board but not upgraded as per the requirement of the processor.its simple they are not matching eachother one of them has to be replaced to let you work properly.

The cpu test is something a computer does to test the board. it sounds like there is something wronge with it. pentium 4 boards very with the clock speed. it depends on the age and if it can handle. if you went from a 1.7 to a 3.2 than you might be overloading it not allowing the computer to register.
basiclly what you need to do is get you a board that is already set-up for a 3.0ghz or higher proseccor.

even through it is a p4b some of the older models can only be upgraded to a 2.0ghz.

Hello you can download a manual from here:

http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=Motherboard&U=en-us0000108&Language=en-us

But BE CAREFULL when you change the cpu.
And remember to add some cooling paste.

Here is some info about the cpu:

http://ark.intel.com/products/27452/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-511-1M-Cache-2_80-GHz-533-MHz-FSB

You will get better performance with a new mainboard/cpu
as this cpu only has one core.

Good luck

I have a soyo SY-P4VSA motherboard with a Intel Pentium 4 2.0 ghz CPU...socket 478..FSB 400mhz. I want to install a socket 478 Pentium 4 2.2ghz processor with 400mhz FSB. Is this compatible?

Yes it's compatible. The best you could probably upgrade to would be a socket 478 Pentium 4 2.8 ghz 400mhz fsb. Hope this helps.

You can also use any other intel 775 socket processor as well. The dual cores are at the top of the list for performance that are compatible with that board, but if you're looking for a cheaper solution, I have that board with a 3GHz pentium 4 and it runs great. Here's a list of all the processors you can use.
Intel Pentium 4 (2.66 - 3.80 GHz)
Intel Celeron D (2.53 - 3.60 GHz )
Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition
(3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Intel Pentium D (2.66 - 3.60 GHz)
Intel Pentium Extreme Edition
(3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Pentium Dual-Core (1.40 - 2.80 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.60 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Extreme (2.66 - 3.20 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Quad (2.33 - 3.00 GHz)
Intel Xeon (1.86-3.40 GHz)
Intel 'Core' Celeron (1.60 - 2.40 GHz)
