There are many indepth explanations and some fixes on the Xbox forums. If you Google RROD you'll probably find all kinds of informaiton as well, but essentially it is an overheating problem that will wreck the chip. It is generally on the models made before the chip was changed last Oct/Nov. If you still have warranty, you should open a service call with Microsoft ASAP and get the whole unit replaced

this might be a hardware failure. try turning it off then back, or try keeping a fan on it when you play on and if that doesn't work call 1800myxbox there you'll find step by step instructions to send it down to texas and get it fixed. if that happens three times you will recieve a brand new xbox 360 that has that problem fixed. also keep in mind to keep your hard drive before you send it to be fixed. i really hope this helps with your problem -good luck
This means you left your XBOX on too long and it over heated. This is any easy fix, leave your Exbox 360 off for about Half an hour, and It should be fine. If you like playing for Long periods of time, I prefer getting a stand for it, it has a switch thats will blow a fan into the xbox.
But also, don't mess with your exbox to much when the 3 lights come on, you might make a spark and 4 lights will show. By then, you would have to take it to a shop or get a new one.
2 red lights flashing is'nt too bad of a deal. just reposition your xbox 360 to a place where more airflow can get to it. plus, dont have anything that gives off heat near the xbox 360, thats vary important to give it room for cool air. it worked for me
no red lights, no previous error msgs, and video output on the box has just died. playing halo yesterday and mid-game the colours went askew (like a green overlay) with horizontal banding, backing out to the dash solved nothing so after a reboot there was simply no video. troubleshooted the tv and cables and its definately the box. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=625804
