Question about Dyson DC17 Animal Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

Dyson DC17 blockage

I have a dc17 that got blocked when the gasket at the bottom of the canister flipped up or was pushed up and dirt and hair went up into the cyclone part. I sprayed it with a hose and all that did was wet it down and made it smell. I tried taking it apart but was only able to remove two screws from the inside and that won't let it come apart. I also have a DC07 and it has 3 screws on top to take it apart. I have washed it several times successfully.
Can anybody tell me how to take the cyclone of the DC17 apart?
Thanks, Chuck

You need to "click" off the cone part it fits tight but a little pressure will pull it (no screws holding it) off revealing more screws under. The you should be able make this apart pretty easy. Top tip :- When it's in pieces put the parts in the dish washer to get all the grim off! Don't forget to remove the black gasket it doesn't like water so much :) Good luck

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If you're concerned that dirt seems to be coming back out of the cleaner, you might find it helpful to check that the soleplate is undamaged and correctly fitted, and that there are no blockages in the cleaner head. It's also a good idea to make sure the brushbar is free of any threads, pet hair or debris.

For information on how to remove the soleplate and perform these checks, take a look at our online support guide:

Under normal use, the filter in your cleaner should be washed at least once every 3-6 months. Use cold water without detergent, and allow up to 24 hours for it to dry completely before replacing it. For guidance on doing this, please see the video linked below:

http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1463&product=DC17-ANIMAL

Following these steps should enable you to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've tried this and feel you'd like to speak to someone in person, you can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to askdysonUS@dyson.com, someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Dyson DC17 Animal does not have enough suction from the wand handle to power the mini turbine head. The wand handle has very little suction.

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

It sounds as though your wand/hose assembly is blocked. Try following the blockage procedure in your user guide or visit our website's support section where you can use our self help guide to diagnose problems.

When it gets warm it cuts out then when left for a

what model dyson is it? If its the DC17 check the rubber seal inside the canister at the bottom of the cyclone where the bottom door comes up. if you see a gap between that filter and the bottom lid then dirt has passed through your filters and went into the motor. This was a bad design for dyson and a common problem on the DC17 only. If that happened, the motor could be damaged. check for a clog somewhere in the vacuum, check both of your filters for dirtyness and cloggs.

Every time i VACUUM THE DIRT AND HAIR GET STUCK ON TOP OF THE FILTER WHICH IS LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE CANISTER//

There is a black gasket type thing that fits on the bottom of the cyclone part that is supposed to keep dirt and hair from getting down to that filter. Yours is probably missing - mine was. I called Dyson and they sent me a new cyclone for free.

Shuts off in upright position and spitting dirt back out

it is a blockage. Dyson cuts off in this case to prevent overload. Also leaking dirt indicates blockage. Strip everything out you can. Remove foot plate on base and check for hair or fibre blockage. it may be small and in an odd place.. seek and ye shall find. If not, return to dealer for service. Good vacuum though.

Dyson DC17 Animal Not Sucking as Well as it Used to

I have had very good luck calling Dyson.

My machine seemed to be doing the same thing--but also dust and hair was building up on top of the filter after one use. I called Dyson, and they sent me a new canister--apparently something wrong with how it was sealing.

Dyson collecting debris/hair, ect on top of hepa filter?

Called Dyson today about the cyclone canister clogging in my DC17 Animal. Turns out it's a problem with the black rubber gasket in the bottom of the canister. This also causes the HEPA filter to get lots of dirt and debris on top of it. They are sending me a new Cyclone canister with the corrected gasket. This will prevent anything but small particles of dust from entering the top of the cyclone and the HEPA filter should no longer collect all that stuff. Hope so!
