Toshiba Portege Video problem

I have a Toshiba Protege M205-S180 tablet PC.

When I boot up I get flashing illegible screens and wonder if this indicates a graphics video card problem?

Just started for me too. When booting, a pattern of vertical lines is displayed in different colors, then the screen gets a more complex pattern followed by screens of solid colors. I tried to hook-up an external monitor but couldn't get signal on it. Since it starts at boot, I suspect it's a hardware problem of some sort.

I have the same problem. I just took the laptop to Circuit City for a diagnostic.

I ended up sending it to Laptop Rescue. Turns out it is a systemboard problem with the integrated graphics. They're replacing the systemboard now

I opened up the laptop to look for any damage to the motherboard and see whether the video part could be replaced. No luck. Ended up replacing the laptop through ebay, not too expensive these days.

I found the same problem on one that I bought from a guy for $100. He had been picking it up by the screen and every connector in the screen and the pivot came loose. I was able to tighten every thing back up and now I have a real nice laptop.

We bought the portege tablet version used and would like to completely wipe it and start fresh. I don't see a way to do that. Please help!

If the hard drive is still intact, press F8 at boot up and run the restore programme. That will reformat the drive and put it back as it was when shipped. If that is not available, place an OS disc in the DVD drive and boot from there choosing "fresh install" to format the drive and start again.
Hope that helps.

Installing Windows XP OS from CD

I have been installing XP on Portege M200 laptops.
I use a usb floppy to install the latest bios update from Toshiba's support site.
After the update the laptop will boot from a USB Cd/DVD drive.
be patient the first part of the up date goes extreamly slowly but it seems to keep working and the install will work.
