Since you mentioned that you formatted the hard disc then you have to install the Operating System again with the restore disk you have or the Win XP or Win & which ever disc you have. The reason you are not seeing anything is because the operating system is not fully loaded or not loaded at all. What concerns me is that it is totally black with nothing showing up not even the BIOS if I understand you correctly. If you see a bunch of text DOS showing information at least at the boot up then we are fine if not then the BIOS may be missing or corrupted that is a whole different matter. If that is the case you will have to flash the BIOS with a separate disc and you will have to know the mother board configurations and the actual BIOS number you have for this PC or laptop. Then restore the BIOS most likely you are seeing the writing at the boot up so lets hope so.

Now press F2 at the boot up and go into the BIOS and set your computer to boot from the CD or DVD ROM drive as the first boot. Then the hard disk as the second boot. Then hit F10 click on save and close now boot up with the operating system disc in the ROM drive and let it do its thing. The software disc will have the driver for a standard ROM drive to be able to install when first booting up. It will go in and setup the files for the install and you are on your way. Just follow the onscreen instructions also I usually have my Internet connected up to my computer when I start the installation because it will do the updates needed online when installing software. That is how simple it is.

If this does not work I would suggest taking your computer to someone who knows more about installations than you do and let them fix it for you. It is a good learning experience but like I said it concerns me about black screen you did not specify of this occurs through out the whole process or just during the install process or if you saw any start up DOS wording. I do hope that this pointed you in a better light on the matter of software installation. If you are seeing something like this at your boot screen then we are good to go. Thanks for using FixYa! How can i format my laptop

Ensure that the hard disk is installed properly in the laptop. The drive cannot be formatted before it is installed, or if it's not installed correctly.

Step 2

Gather the required software. The type of media will depend on the hardware in your laptop. Older computers without a CD-ROM drive, will require the use of the operating system floppy disks. Laptops that can run Windows XP require the installation CD and product key. Older versions of Windows also have disk-formatting capability in the installation process, and the installation media is either a CD or floppy disk.

Step 3

Place the installation disk or manufacturer software in the drive and then boot the computer. Early in the installation process, the Windows installer has a step that will detect any installed hard disks and allow for them to be formatted. The software from the disk manufacturer will also detect the hard disk and give you the option to format the drive.

Step 4

Determine which file system is to be used. Windows XP will either work on a NTFS file system or an older VFAT file system. Choose the desired file system when prompted.

Step 5

Decide whether the whole disk should be formatted or if the disk will be partitioned and each partition to be formatted separately. The Windows installer includes a menu-driven utility that will create hard disk partitions before formatting. If the hard disk is being formatted to replace an existing Windows installation, delete the existing partitions and re-create them.

Step 6

Format the hard disk with the Windows installer when prompted. The Windows installer will let you know when it is time to format the disk and ask for confirmation.

No boot sector on hard disk - No bootable devices - strike F1 to

AFAIK all XP disks were bootable so maybe check your bios options.
If they are correct and it still does not boot them goto bootdisk.com and download the floppy setup disks for XP. You could then set your laptop to boot from floppy and install xp from there.

The disk itself may be corrupt , go to microsoft and download xp home or pro , whatever your using and burn to a disk .If you don't have access to another computer , go to a repair shop and you can usually buy a burn't copy of xp for 5 to 10 dollars . RE-install as usual. please note !!! you must know what service pack is needed for the install . SP1 - SP2 ....OR to be on the safe side just get XP SP1. good luck!

Dear Sheila

After connecting it to the motherboard, switch on the pc, then go to properties of "my computer" then choose "Hardware" then choose device manager and over here u will come to know weather ur CD rom has been detected or not, if it has a question mark then it means u have to install drivers for it, but if ur using Win XP, i am sure it shd detect automatically and need not ask for drivers. Hoping a good rating from u....!!!

Thankyou

Try connecting the CDROM drive to the IDE ports (Secondary IDE port) like setting its jumper to Master. Ensure that the connection to its power supply is firm. Change the setting of your POWER OPTIONS which is under the CONTROL PANEL and change the setting for TURN-OFF HARD DISK to NEVER.
