Question about Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Drive unaccessible When I plug in my external hard drive, nothing appears on the Desktop or in the drives view. It has been formatted for my MacBook and has worked nearly flawlessly since I got it about a year ago. However, it has recently stopped showing up! I am pretty confused on what to do because I can't seem to locate the add/remove hardware or any way to make the hard drive appear. Tried rebooting and shutting down more than a few times and not sure where to go next. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

If it is possible could you try it on another machine either another mac or a windows based pc.

If it is recognised on a windows pc (you wont be able to access any data though), you can, within reason assume that the mac is at fault somewhere.

Unfortunatley I dont know much about Mac's, but is there some kind of device manager that shows what hardware is installed? It could be worth checking to see if there are any errors on the HDD side of it, try deleting any references to the MyBook if there is any, then plugging it back in.

I hate to say it, but I can't help you much more than that.

You could always return it to WD under the warranty system if you cannot access it on a Mac or PC.

I just bought a Seagate 2 TB desktop drive for Mac and PC, it works on my PC but nothing happens on the MacBook

If the Seagate hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS then the MAC cannot read and write to this hard drive.
To exchange data between the PC and MAC then the Seagate hard drive needs to be formatted on a PC in FAT32 not NTFS.

It wont show/mount on my desktop

Have you ever connected this external harddrive to a macbook?
If you formatted it with your mac, it typically formats to a mac filesystem. What you would need to do is plug it back into the macbook, open up Disk Utilities, and then, after choosing your ext. hdd. you tell it to format into the EXFAT format. which is compatible with both systems.

Unaccessible drive it gives me 2 mesages: m1 :

The first error signals the fact that the partition data is corrupted. The second one signal an error in communication . Both put together signal the fact that your unit has died. You might have a slim chance that the actual disk inside it might have some life left in it: take it out, connect it directly to a desktop and try to access and extract all the files from it.

I was able to use my Hitachi xl 1000 external hard drive on my computer and I wanted to be able to use it for my Macbook Pro as well but as soon as I used it for Time Machine Backup I wasn't able to use it...

If the MAC formats the external hard drive then the desktop cannot see any files on the hard disk even though it detects the external hard drive.
If you format the external hard drive using the Desktop computer and format it in FAT32 then the MAC can read and write to this hard drive and the desktop PC can also read and write to the external hard drive.
MAC computers can read and write on PC formatted disks but not the other way around.

I am using SuperDuper to clone my 160GB MacBook Hard Drive to a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. My problem is that I cannot determine why neither the SuperDuper program nor the MacBook itself...

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB hard drive is formatted for PC, not Mac. The simplest way to get your MacBook to recognize this new drive--and therefore copy the files from your old drive--is to plug it in to a PC and format the drive. I was advised to format with FAT 16, as this would be recognized by my MacBook. Fortunately, the process was not that involved, since the Vista-driven PC found the drivers for the WD Scorpio Blue automatically. Once formatted, I safely removed the drive and plugged it into my MacBook via a USB port using a BYTECC Drive Mate. Magically, it now appeared on my MacBook Desktop and was recognized by the cloning software I was using, SuperDuper. Three hours later, the files on my old hard drive were successfully cloned onto the Scorpio Blue--except now I had an additional 364GB of storage space. Swapping out the old drive and replacing it with the new was not a big deal at all--just make sure you have the right screwdriver for the last task--a Torx #6. Mission accomplished.

Can't format new Iomega 1 TB drive on a mac

the mbr has been lost and may be the boot files too. this happens if sector zero is bad or weak
use a windows pc .and remove the raw drive from the casing of this external drive. now hook it into the windows pc and see for the drive detection in bios. if detected the drive is ok and needs a good low level formatting. with a llf tool you can get one free from hddguru.com

Formatted (on PC) 1TB WD hard drive cannot be altered on Macbook

What OS are you running? What is it formatted as FAT32 or NTFS and how big are the partitions. Various operating systems, hardware and formatting schemes have different limitations. If you want to use the drive in Leopard formatted with NTFS which is the only way to create partitions larger than 20 or 30 GB you may need to install an NTFS file system driver like FUSE.
The other option is to format it as HFS and install Macdrive 7 in Windows to use Mac formatted drives in Windows.

Hope this helps.
