Hi, A chip inside my dvd drive has burnt because of short circuit. The bottom metal lid of the drive touched the soldered pins of the chip and it burnt. I had a burning smell coming from my pc, so I opened it to find that the smell was coming from dvd drive. When I opened it ( 3 yrs old, warranty already expired) I found this burnt chip. Is there any way to repair this now? The local LG service center has informed me that it can not repait it.

Greetings... I think your having a problem with your hardware DVD R/W. based on your observation... 1) The dvd rom drive is detected on your windows xp and by pushing open/close button still working... " this indicate that the power and SATA / IDE cable was properly connected. 2) And you've said "NOT SPINNING".... "means you have undergo testing by touching or listening DVDrom drive while the disk was inside after closing the disk tray which is right"
Therefore your DVDrom drive was defective... you can also check by opening the metal cover to see if the disk was spinning and if the laser of optical lens released a red light.
Remove the 4 rubber feet to expose the screws. Remove the screws. Slice the label on the side along the case halves. Insert a paper clip into one of the tiny holes on the rear corners and press lightly will lifting the lid to release the catch. Do this to the other rear corner and the top will come off easily then.
With the top removed, gently lift off one side of the metal cover over the interface PC board and remove the cover. Remove the 4 screws securing the board to the bottom case. Remove the 4 screws securing the drive to the bottom case.
The drive has locked up and if you remove it, you may be able to free it up,Try to use a regular audio cd and see if you have the same problem,if so the drive is locked up and needs replaced or freed up.

What Kind of Label? How did it get stuck inside this Drive? Has the Label caught on the Bottom or the top of the Drive? Did you try to write to the Label with the Drive? If it is a small centre of the disc label and is stuck on the upper steady Hub then the drive to needs to be opened, not just the Drive case but the lid of the actual drive. If there is only one screw in the casing then it may slide or clip together, Check that none of the Labels are hiding Screw holes...(Often Done) Then look for small holes/slots in the side of the Casing where one might slip a thin Blade or Screw driver, this may unclip plastic Side clips... If that fails, send me some pics of the case and I'll see what I can do to sort the Method... Hope this helps. C
