I own a Sony Handycam - about 5 years old. It was in wonderful condition, then started something weird, and now we can't use it to record or play. When you switch it to Camera or VCR, it displays a...

This can be caused by several problems including the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly, a defective clutch in the take-up spool or a faulty rotary mode switch. This will require disassembling the camera to repair and can be done fairly inexpensively. However, it's not really a user serviceable problem and should be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Tape ejects immdediately when I load tape.

I own a Sharp VL-Z1 DV video camera. I had this same problem and thought it was from using the ME Maxell tapes. I took the battery out of the unit and let it reset. Worked fine after that.

SONY DIGITAL HANDYCAM DCR-TRV340 PROBLEMS AS NOT CHARGING

Do you have any issues when operating the camera using the AC? If not, then the battery is most definitely your culprit. Batteries have a limited life span and they do tend to have a shorter lifespan as the years go by. If you can try depleting them and seeing if then they recharge, it's worth a shot. Otherwise a simple battery replacement is in order.

Also, try and use another battery and see if it charges. If it doesn't, then it just may be the charger. I'd also check Sony's website to see if there's a firmware update for your camera. Download and install it.
