The first thing I would, as it is quick and easy, is test a few bits of your hardware, you could have a memory chip going bad or a bad sector on the harddrive causing seek time problems.
Download and burn to a CD the UBCD (ultimate boot CD), this utility has a bunch of tools on it to test your hardware.
Harddrive tests are very quick, memory tests can take a while, if you see anything you are unsure of don't hesitate to ask me.

Download from here:

its a common windows problem. there is a multitude of options to solve this. try start windows in safe mode and start a program. if that works go a restore point back. or reinstall windows. or get a newer version of windows. windows 7 or 8 are likely to perform better than windows xp - assuming it is windows xp you run. avoid vista like the plague

My computer, Windows XP, freezes when I use Firefox

Your system loaded with Windows Xp Operating System might get affected by various viruses and malware. The antivirus softwares installed in your system for the removal and prevention of viruses from your system cause the freezing issue. This antivirus softwares might take too many time to load and it also make the entire system slow to boot. The antivirus programs result in the freezing of the Windows Xp during start up. Thus you need to temporary uninstall the antivirus software during the start up of your system.

When I installed and tried to run your program I get the following error: This application requires using the 4.73 help system or a more recent version. I am running Windows 7. What is the problem? Can...

The specs for that program shows the last operating system it was designed for was XP. Let's try the easy fix first. ClickStart, type Compatibility in the search field, and click theEnter key. This will bring up the Program Compatibility troubleshooter. ClickNext and it do a quick check on your machine. It will ask you toSelect the program you're having problems with and click Next. Click Troubleshoot Program, then check the box forThe program worked in earlier viersions of Windows... Click Windows XP (Service Pack 2)and click Next. Click the box for Start the program. It will attempt to open the program as if you were running XP. After the program attempts to open, clickNext. Now it will ask if it worked for you. If so, click Yes, save these settings for this program. If you clicked Yes, every time you open the program now it will open as if it was running in XP. You're done if this worked!
Sometimes that method doesn't work. For those cases, there is a new feature called XP Mode, which will install a virtual machine for you to run your program in. It's not too hard to get configured; it actually installs a legal copy of Windows XP for you to run your program in. Here's a Microsoft article on how to get it set up: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/. XP mode will now work even if you don't have the chip installed for Hardware Assisted Virtualization Technology.

XP search facility

Hello my friend, how are you? Regarding on your problem, you can do the 1 time search in all your music files regardless of their individual format by using Windows Media Player Software which was pre-installed already in your Xp after you install your OS XP in your computer. Using Windows Media Player you can group all the music files you have in computer per title, artist, album, genre or even date and names. To do that kindly follow the steps below: 1. Open Windows Media Player located at the program files in your computer. In case you cannot locate it kindly click the START BUTTON located buttom part of your scree. Then click ALL PROGRAMS or PROGRAMS then WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER. I case WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER is not their Click ACCESSORIES then goto ENTERTAINMENT then Locate WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER. 2. After you locate and open wWindows Media Player or WMP kindly click the tab Library then suddenly a consule messagebox pop-up asking "Would you like to search music in your computer?" then kindly click YES Button then let the WMP search and gather all the Music files you have in your computer.  3. Uninstall XP Professional

If the computer was upgraded, then go into START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE Programs, see if uninstall Windows XP Pro is there. If it is you can uninstall it and not loose anything and the computer will reveert back to the operating system that was on there, before th upgrade.

Sometimes it is there, sometimes not.

If that doesn't work, then go to START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE Programs | windows components, and take out any uneeded components. Also check your system tray (bottom right by the clock) and see if there are eny programs there that you can close or better still uninstall as they eat memory and slow down your system.
