You don't give a model number so I don't know if this applies to yours, but some later Sony models (CDP-CE375, for instance, which I've seen several of) have a problem reading discs if they aren't loaded absolutely flat on the tray. The ones I've looked at work just fine unless the disc is a little off. It has something to do with the mechanics of the clamping arrangement, I think, although I haven't looked into it. I have replaced the laser in two of these and still had the problem; the same discs read and played just fine when I made sure they were seated flat.

So yours may have a weak laser if it's gotten a lot of use, but it may just be the model.

SHERWOOD CDC-2000C ?D6376 starts skipping it was sent to be repair played about 2 discs when I got it back and started skipping again

Unfortunately the laser pickup assembly needs to be replaced, overtime the laser becomes weaker until it can not track properly and will end up skipping or won't read the disc. It is far cheaper to replace the CD player than have the assembly replaced.

Sometimes I get no disc error when insert a cd in my sony cdp-ex100 cd player

Put in an ordinary audio CD and play to notice if the CD is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility that the laser head can be defective.
Now certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it is not read. Hence it will reject. So it is ideal to clean manually the laser head eye using a cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

Sounds like the laser has become weak. If this is the case, the laser assy. will need to be replaced. Lasers can cost anywhere from 20.00ea to 150.00ea. Then you must consider the labor rates too. If you are unsure about repairing you can try to take the cover off the unit and look at the laser assy. It should have a number on it that starts with KSS-XXX. Where XXX is a 3 digit number.

If you want to you can email me with this number and I will let you know what this laser costs and then you can make a decision from that point. email at jcameo7270@yahoo.com

Sony CDP-397 Problems

The CD tray is driven by a belt below the tray or on the right hand side (I can't remember the exact model). The belt is probably slipping. Replace the belt and you should be fine. I think you should be able to replace the belt without removing the tray.
I'll look up the model tonight and update this if there are significant differences from what I already stated.
