Put in an ordinary audio CD and play to notice if the CD is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility that the laser head can be defective.
Now certain cleaner disks will not be tracked to run for cleaning as it is not read. Hence it will reject. So it is ideal to clean manually the laser head eye using a cotton bud with gentle pressure on the lens eye.
If there is no result then watch if the CD spins or tries to spin. If so the board seems to work unless a test is taken on the main board but the possibility of a defective optical head can be the suspected fault.
If any of the above seems otherwise we must recheck with possibilities of a malfunction of the main processor board

Sounds like the laser has become weak. If this is the case, the laser assy. will need to be replaced. Lasers can cost anywhere from 20.00ea to 150.00ea. Then you must consider the labor rates too. If you are unsure about repairing you can try to take the cover off the unit and look at the laser assy. It should have a number on it that starts with KSS-XXX. Where XXX is a 3 digit number.
If you want to you can email me with this number and I will let you know what this laser costs and then you can make a decision from that point. email at firstname.lastname@example.org
