I have a VR lens that I've been using with my D5000 for about a year and a half now, with no troubles. Recently however, after a small bump to the lens, the camera refused to recognize it. I've tried the internet tips and tricks - resetting menus, cleaning contact surfaces... nothing works. Ideas? Or do I just need a new lens because something got jolted?

If the camera works with other lenses, then the problem is with your 18-55. Bring it to the service centre to get it repaired.

Have you tried a SOFT RESET? My camera stopped focusing & I too tried a bunch of different things including a HARD RESET which was to remove & replace the battery, Open the door to the memory card & use a pin to press the reset button. Nothing worked!

Then I removed/replaced the lens after cleaning the contacts & did a soft reset
Press & hold the [i] at the bottom left on the rear of the camera & at the same time press and hold the INFO button at the top near the trigger. Within 2 seconds not only was the camera reset but the focus was now working,

Blurry pictures

You did not say which lens or lenses you are using, but most auto-focus lenses have a switch for selecting manual or auto-focus. First, check your camera's menu settings to make sure auto-focus is enabled and then your lens to make sure you did not accidently leave it in the manual focus position? If it is in the auto-focus position and still not taking sharp pictures, switch it to manual and see if you can get it to focus correctly. It is also possible that your auto-focus alignment is out because your camera was bumped, jolted or dropped. If realignment is necessary, you can send the camera and lens to Nikon for repair or find a knowledgeable camera repairman.

Why wont my Nikon af nikkor 70-300mm G lens autofocus its self with my D5000 camera

The D5000 does not have a focus motor in the body, relying on the lens to have one. The old 70-300mm G lens does not have a focus motor, relying on the camera to have one. Thus, this combination will not autofocus.
The newer 70-300mm AF-S G lens, as well as the even newer 70-300mm VR AF-S lens, do have the autofocus motor and thus will autofocus on the D5000.

This sounds like the zoom ring has had a knock somehow and it is no longer free to rotate.
I think it is too early to be wearing out.
Either way I suggest you have it inspected by a camera repair shop as it will only become worse over time.

That lens has a coupling on the lens mount which you'll see rotating when you alter the focus ring and look at the back of the lens. it does not have an in-built focus motor and so will only autofocus with Nikon bodies which incorporate a mechanical AF coupling on the lens mounting flage.

I had my D5000 for a month now, recently i noticed something with my camera. looking though the viewfinder only, whenever i focus (half pressing the shutter button), the view from the viewfinder moves up,...

Welcome to the real world of photography, using the viewfinder is a whole new experience in the crating of fine photographs. Aside from this what you are actually seeing is the VR turning on and locking onto the target, you should actually feel this happening as well (if you are holding the camera correctly) What you are experiencing is normal. Thank you for the excellent description

Manual focusing on d5000

Most professional photographers use spot focussing...just the center dot. You focus on the subject...hold the shutter button half-way and recompose..press the rest of the way.

Nikon 18-55mm AF-S/ VR lense shudder?

I believe you're hearing the VR in the lens adjusting. Try turning the VR off and see if you hear the sound. If not, then you have a normal operating lens.
