What kind of computer is this? Try clicking on the "Update Windows" icon in the control panel, this should bring up a default explorer window that shoudl try to connect to the internet. You can use that to either update your ie to repair the problem or download firefox to get yourself at least on the internet. Then you can try to actually run the update to a better ie version. You also may want to try in add/remove programs removing the IE explorer, this will not totally remove it, the update icon should still function, sounds like you may have issues with your drive or controller thou writing bad data to the sector thus corrupting the explorer itself. Try running a scandisk off the hard drive icon right click.

The sound icon doesnt show on my computer and the volume slider is locked

Open the Control Panel, Sounds. Try doing a Windows and Sony Updates to verify they are current, up-to-date. You can find the Windows XP Audio drivers here: http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=PCVRX550&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab You can reset the Tray Notification Area by opening the Task Manager,(right click a open area in the Taskbar, select Start Task Manager) select explorer.exe and click on End Process, in the pop-up, End Process again, now select top left File, select New Task (Run...), in the Create New Task , type explorer, click OK. your Tray Notification Area is reset.

Lenovo ThinkCentre M52 Displays limited tray icons on startup.

I was going to say get to a the task manager by CTRL+ALT+DEL and in the upper left hand corner of the window click File then new task (RUN). Type in explorer.exe and hit ok. This normally brings back your task bar, start menu and desktop icons.

If you can't run it, then you definitely have a virus blocking it. Run a virus scan.

Cant get back to desktop

Pretty vague help request "can't get back to desktop". Is the computer booting? Is it that your desktop is blank after it boots with no icons being shown on the desktop? Viruses can hide the desktop and other things on the computer. Maybe your boot process has the problem when it tried to display the desktop. Try hitting the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys. Hold down each key as you hit them and don't take your finger off the keys until after you have pressed the DEL (Delete) Key. This will bring up your Task Manager. In the task manager window click the Processes tab and look for explorer.exe. If you see it click explorer.exe to highlight it then click End Process. After you end the process click FILE at the top left corner of the Task Manager Window and click the option New Task (run). When the Create New Task window opens type: explorer.exe and press OK. This will cause your desktop to reappear with icons if windows had a problem displaying it on the boot process.

Computer freezes up after loading personal settings . C.annot find start up module pops up. Acrobat reader pops up with folders on screen. If all these pop up and I close them then loading continues and...

It seems the acrobat application is creating these problems. Please use the system configuration utility to remove this application from startup.

Click on Start >Run (If you have Windows 7 then type msconfig in search)and then type msconfig. In the msconfig window, under the startup tab, look for any entry which says Adobe and uncheck it. Click on Apply and OK and restart the system. This should do the trick.

I HAVE A WINDOW XP HOME EDITION AND WHEN I START MY COMPUTER THE ONLY THING THAT COMES UP IS THE BACKGROUND. THERE ARE NO ICONS OR A BAR AT BOTTOM OF SCREEN.

the icons and the bar(task bar) at the bottom of the screen are enabled by the explorer.exe file

it starts automatically but in your case it is not starting

to start it when your computer starts and comes at the desktop, press alt+ctrl+delete button at the same time to bring up the task manager

when you do this a task manager shows up in a window

in task manager window click on file, it will be located on the top left portion on task manager

now click on "new task(run)"

this opens another window, in that window type
"explorer"
without the quotes "" and press enter
this will bring you icons and task bar at the bottom of the screen
