Hi, I bought a new external harddrive over the internet and found your website very confusing to register it, although I had the right website, in the end I phoned the office, I think in Melbourne, and a very nice lady gave me a great deal of help, and everything is settled now, so thankyou to your lady in the office in Australia for her kind assistance,
I could not find where to register my product on your webpage, and obvoiusly ended up going to the wrong section,
All's well that ends well
thankyou, anne roddick

1- The usb connection on the media player does not supply enough current for fulsized drives.
2-The drive format and file system needs to be something your media player will recognize, most likely FAT32

System not recognizing external device

I understand by "external device" is that your none of your USB ports work and you can't use your CD/DVD burner
Get a Hard Drive to USB connection, they are cheap and you can get one in any computer store, remove your HARD DRIVE from your Compaq and connect it through USB to your new computer. You can copy all your data and still continue using your old herd drive as an external drive.

have you formated your hard drives? are your black or white jumpers hooked to the pins on top of hard drive? if the hard drives are new chances are the jumpers are still in small plastic package.the jumpers are little peaces of plastic with two holes with metal in them. the jumpers go on were it says master if you are using 2 hard drives .the other hard drive the jumper goes were it says slave. if you are using 1 hard drive you put the jumper on cs.

Doesnt register and all the lights stay

Does it work after you change the USB cable?
If so, then your USB cable is the problem.

Does it work on some "other" computer?
If so, then your computer is the problem.

Does it work it _any_ USB port in your computer?

Failing that, disassemble the casing, to find:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive itself.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive to a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive can be detected.
If not, then the disk-drive has "died".
Buy a new disk-drive, and connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "revive" your external unit.

Read the serial-number from the disk-drive, and access Western Digital's web-site, and enter the number in the "check warranty" section, to see if your unit is still under warranty, i.e., a free replacement.

If not under warranty, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty Program" -- buy a new External Hard-Drive from their web-site, and they will give you about a 20% discount from their "retail" price.

When i plug in my hard drive it starts to make a clicking sound as the motor begins. It is not connecting. What do i do?

This doesnt always means the drive is bad, it can just be the cable...
My girlfriend bought me a verbatim 250gig external drive, which accoring to her was new from the shop but my PC couldnt pick it up, when connected, blue light flashes with a clicking nose... tried all usb ports but nothing... (wanted to take it back but she lost the receipt!!!!) after that didnt really bother with it until one evening playing FIFA on my sisters playstation and realised that the usb cable is the same as my external drive, so tried the cable and VOILA!!!!!!! PC picks it up and works as suppose to, till this day... So guys and gals, before going out to replace your external drive, borrow a playstation usb cable from your neighbor and have a go...

hope this helps

SimpleTech 80 GB Portable HD Won't Read

It sounds like a problem with the board inside the case,- the actual hard drive is probably OK. Opening the case will void any warranty but there may not be much left anyway. There should be 4 screws in the bottom of the drive,- front 2 may be hidden under a sticker. Try installing the drive in your new case or an empty drive bay inside your computer. I have had external hard drive cases fail before and the actual hard drive was ok.
