    Thanks found it !

The hard drive I want to install is from a similar machine but not exact model # so the pins do not match up. Do you know if there is an adaptor I could use ?

    Thanks

    Thanks again,

I am learning a lot .I have a SATA Harddrive on both machines.

The machine I am trying to connect the harddrive to has a 22pin connector from the motherboard to the harddrive. It appears I am missing a the hard drive connector from the hard drive to the machine (22 pin connector). It seems like it is specific to this model also as there is a different setup in a similar machine but different model as the connector will not slip off this similar machine.

Is there a universal connector I can connect to this 22 pin male connector that I can connect to the harddrive or will I have to get this specific connector from the same model?

    Thanks

It looks like I was trying to fit a SATA to an IDE on the motherboard (44pin) on further examination .

Why would they have 2 different type harddrives on the same model?? Is SATA more popular than IDE?

    Thanks

    P

Flip the machine up side down, battery away from you, and you will see three covers. The center cover in the middle is the memory. The other two covers towards you, one on the left, the other in the center, the hard drive is under one of these two. I beleive it's under the one on the left, but it's been a while since I've had one of these machines in front of me.

Hard drives come in IDE or SATA and are basically universal, depending on the type that the machine uses, ie... IDE hard drives will fit into any machine that uses an IDE hard drive, and SATA is the same. Check to make sure you don't have one SATA and one IDE, and also check to see if there is a hard drive connector on the end of the hard drive that was in your machine. Some machines have specific hard drive connectors that go on the drive in order to connect to the board. If there is a connector, it will slide off the pins on the end of the drive.

Windows is corrupted or the hard drive has issues, if you have a cd installation disc try a fresh install, if no change! the hardware needs to be checked for possible replacement.

It appears the recovery partition has been removed from your hard disk. You need to obtain a Recovery CD from Toshiba.

If you have a Windows XP Home installation CD then you can use it to reinstall Windows on your Toshiba and the product installation code will be on the Windows label on the bottom of your laptop.

Remove thwe new RAM and hard drive. Does it boot to the BIOS menu? If yes, add the hard drive and do the same again then add RAM and do the same.
I suspect something does not fit in properly. Probably the RAM.
Don't forget to initialise the hard drive if trying to format it. The System disk should take care of that.

Toshiba M45-S351

Generally a bad hard drive, but it could also be an operating system error/glitch. Do a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. If the repair doesn't take, then reformat the drive and install a new operating system. If you have any issues during or after the format and install, then the hard drive has failed and will need replaced.

Unfortunately I was unable to find a step by step guide for you, however I found a picture of the backside of your laptop. There should be only one screw to remove the cd rom drive located where the red arrow is pointing;

Simply remove that screw and pull out the drive :-)
