Question about Maxtor MaXLine Plus II 250 GB Hard Drive
My Maxtor 250G Ext HD , Model # 6L250R0 was accidently dropped , from only 2 feet, and started emitting this awful tone from the inside of the unit. The tone was a digital sounding tone. When I connected it to my laptop , my laptop wouldn't recognize it. I tried it on a few other laptops and the same things happened , it did not recognise the unit and the same noise was heard. As soon as the power supply is plugged in and the unit is turned on it keeps making that awful noise for a few seconds and then stops. As well the motor doen't turn at all. What can I do to retrieve my valuable documents and family photos????
Well thats a toughie, theres a recovery company that will pull the platter's out and install it into a functional drive, recovery experts or something. You can try it yourself but it's delicate on a laptop drive but not impossible.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to boot
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty
then you might run the click start run typ cmd then type chckdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt recover any bad sectors and automatically fix any bad/corrupt files on your hard drive
hope this helps
