As long as you have balanced your tonearm correctly, maybe its simply just a problem with your vinyl? could just be dust in the grooves or could be static build up, try cleaning your vinyl with an antistatic cloth to see if the sound improves.
I thought the same thing initially and actually had a couple of new LPs still in the packaging that I tried as well but it sounds the same...now I'm worried I may have done some damage to the cartridge or stylus during the setup that's causing the problem....
I would have thought the noise would be more constant if it were due to damage, if the antistatic cloth doesn't work (even new lp's can have a build up of static on them) then maybe try the manufacturer. Sorry I cant be any more help.
cool, thanks for the feedback. i ended up just taking the whole thing apart and doing the setup again, as well as wiped down w/ an antistatic clock and i'm in good shape now. i think maybe i didn't have the arm quite parallel perhaps...the dangers of setting up your equipment at 2 a.m. without being too clear-headed... :o)
:-) sometimes it the only time you can find the time lol. Glad its sorted.
