Did the cig lighter plug come with the unit or did you buy it seperatly? If you did make sure that the gps works on 12v because it probaly works off 5-9v and 12v will burn it out.

Hi,

If all else fails, pls perform a systems reset. The idea is to revert the unit back to factory default. Of course this would also erase all user settings and configurations.

  • Page - While holding the page key down when powering, the unit will cause an forced cold start (Auto Locate);
  • Mark - While holding the mark key down when powering, the unit will perform a total reset unit. It will revert to factory default less all user settings/configurations!
If you performed a full reset using any of the above, the unit must be allowed to collect a complete almanac before normal operation. Initially, the unit will do a satellite fix requiring about 10 minutes preferably outdoor in a constant position; another 15 minutes for the almanac to reload. Thereafter, pls check the date and time.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hi

It is possible that when you have plugged into the Cig outlet, the power has been intermittent and locked up the device. Disconnecting it and removing its internal batteries allowed you to reset this problem. The 12 volt Cig socket may be corroded and offering poor connectivity. I suggest making a more permanet wiring arrangement to your adaptor lead without using the Cig socket to prevent this problem reoccurring. Or just use rechargeable batteries and keep the device portable.

I would hook the cig socket upto a meter and see if its running at 12v or not and how stable it is.

There is a problem of the power supply section of your GPS, try to check the resistor for change value or open; check the filter capacitor for leak or open ; check for regulator tranistor for shorted or open, this caused your power supply have abnormal operation, thats why only battery only the battery works..

    hope this may help;

If you can try first changing the battery of the unit to check if everything will be working fine, because there's a possibility that the battery went bad or worse the unit has some problem with it , if after changing the battery still have the same problem better have it replace and take the new unit Off Shore for your own good.

Hope that helps..........

Why when i plug in my garmin device does it show a computer but no maps

Are you using a simple USB lead plugged into a USB power source? If so, the unit is (correctly) going into its USB mode.

You can also try different USB leads, some do not have the data line so act as just a power lead. It's the data line that signals the GPS unit to go into USB mode.

Regardless of the type of lead, your unit will charge like this and then, when the lead is disconnect and the unit turned on, will work normally off the internal battery.

If this is your experience, you will need either the correct GPS power source or a "USB power" lead.

How do i insert a coordinate to find a spesific fishing spot

Hello,

The Garmin nuvi's were designed as automotive navigators and not really designed to be used as marine or outdoor GPS units with the exception of the nuvi 550 which is an all around GPS.
The Garmin handhelds are recommended for marine and off road recreational use but it is possible to navigate if you know the coordinates of your fishing spot.
To enter coordinates: Touch Where to? > Coordinates and touch a box to enter a coordinate.
You can also refer to the manual for more information. nüvi® 215

Batteries will not charge

Your not the Lone Ranger on this problem. After awhile the battery will no longer take a charge. IT is not a replaceable battery by the user. It must be sent back to Garmin for a new battery. If you only use the gps when in a vehicle, it still will work fine when pluged into a 12v source.

My garmin does not operate plugged in to my car nor by battery

You have not said why that is....

Have you fully charged the battery prior to using in the car?

Using the power from the 12v plug in a vehicle will not "charge" the internal battery, but tends to maintain it somewhat. If the fuse in the end of the 12v connector plug is blown and the battery in the unit is low then this will cause the unit to shut down or fail to fire up.

Please check both, the units battery level and the fuse in the cig lighter plug and the plug that connects the unit to the cig lighter outlet.

Now the second half of your statement:

Nor by my battery

It is either not charged ( AC charger) or it has reached the end of its life which if used correctly is about 2 years. If the life of battery is shortened , then it is by a common practice of misuse. This misuse is to have the unit plugged to the car 12v when staring the engine.

1) it damages the battery life
2) It can and does damage the SIIRF chip, which is responsible for connecting to the satellites

I suggest that if it does not charge over a 10 hours Max period to its full state, then replace the battery immediately to avoid damage to the electronics from battery leak.
Thanks for using FIXYA

SailorMan,
Contacted Garmin Tech Support and they verified the problem with the WAAS. They said the engineers were looking at the problem. Estimated the fix would be ready in 2 to 3 months. I turned the unit on inside where the unit could not receive any satellites then disabled the WAAS and the unit works without problems. It is just not as accurate.
