Karen, behind that screwed on panel are the controls to light the pilot. Then follow the instructions for lighting the pilot, which should be on the back of that removable panel.

Hope this helps you.

Under the gas valve is a removable panel. On models of that era there should also be a second panel behind the first. remove both.

the pilot light should be clearly visible.

If no pilot, turn the gas valve to OFF. wait 60 seconds. locate the tubes from the gas valve to the pilot location. turn the valve to pilot, and with a long match or grill lighter lit, place flame at the pilot location and press down on the pilot button beside the main valve.

pilot should light. If not shut off the gas and call a technician. If yes, hold the pilot button for 60 seconds, then slowly release. Pilot should stay lit. If not, shut off gas and replace thermocouple, start relight sequence over. If pilot stays lit, replace inner cover and adjust temp to 120 deg. If heater fires up, replace outer cover. Done.

If heater does not light, replace gas valve or entire unit. Water heaters have a limited life expectancy, and if my recollection is correct your unit is 10yrs past warranty.

Very minimal hot water being produced from my water heater

1) Clean air intake, and do required yearly maintenance.

2) Gas control valve thermostat could be going bad, causing disruption of gas to pilot, and uneven heating of water.

3) Without knowing brand and model number that shows on label on side of tank, it is difficult to add specifics.

When the wind blows the pilot light out, I have great difficulty in pressing the buttons in to relight it.

You are getting negative pressure in the burner ... this can be caused by the access panel not being reinstalled properly after you relight the pilot. Vents can cause a "venturi effect" and if the access door is not on tight it will indeed become a real pain

My heater is not getting hot i can not tell if their is a pilot light or a reset button i don know what to do with the heater it is very different how can i heat my water heater

Reliance makes gas and electric water heaters.
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/

Best way to start is to look at label on side of tank.
Label has serial number, model number, plus it will say if heater is gas or electric.
Reliance water heater age is shown in serial number: first digit is letter, second two digits are numbers: for example numbers 02 would be the year 2002.
If water heater is 8-12 years old, it might be time to consider new tank.

Gas water heater has 3 inch metal flue pipe coming out of top of tank.
Gas pilot is probably off.
Relight pilot light: Most gas water heaters today have instructions on side of tank just above gas valve that say how to relight pilot light. Instructions vary by model.
If you have gas water heater that is older, it might be easier to call a plumber.

Electric water heater has panels on front.
Open top panel and push in red reset button.
If you have electric water heater of any age, you can usually fix it yourself same day:

My waterheater continues to go off. It began yesterday. I have had to relight the pilot 6 times. It seems as if it will work until someone actually needs hot water, then will go off.

Pilot light gone out. How do I relight? Which

In general, large button from gas valve push in & hold 20-30 secs at same time push electronic lighter/ignition button to light pilot. Remember to hold in only gas button. the pilot light heats up a thermo couple [u can see this in the flame] and when hot enough allows the main gas through and the pilot to remain on.
If not then either thermo couple not heated for long enough or
it may need replacing

Lochinvar water heater model LTN040G. Can't move dial from "on" past "pilot" to "off" to relight. Seems like there must be something I need to do to make it move, but can't figure it out.

The valve should be able to be depressed at the pilot setting and as you slowly depress it you should get it to move past pilot to off. You do not however need to go to off. You can go back to pilot and relight it and go back to on.

If it will not relight and will not go back to off it sounds like the valve is damaged internally and will need to be replaced.
